MG MG Y Type - YT - For Sale in the USA

YTs are appreciating fast!! Have a look at the one for sale at the Classic Car Galley in the USA. The URL is www.classiccargallery.com

At an asking price of US Dollars 45,900 this has to be a record. The advertisement states it is one of only 10 left hand drive cars known to exist. In fact there are actually 50 (8 EXLs and 42 EXUs). This information may provide a would be buyer with some flexibility!

Awful contrast on the color scheme of the page - makes it really hard to read the details!

What a shame it has been so badly restored. Hardly any of the mods made will have any impact on safety or comfort and as for the wooden dash ...

Paying that sort of money I would expect it to be much better and much more original. Chucking the words Pebble Beach in there does nothing!

Gang,

He keeps throwing it up on ebay, with no serious takers. Marginally know the shop and have never been impressed with the price to quality offerings. Are located in a 'Gold Coast' area and must feed on the less informed.

Hmmmm, (a) wiring looks very suspect, (b) steel floor improving handling,? how??? is the chassis rotten? (c) HEADRESTS??? (d)wooden dash? (e) Steering wheel??

do the restorers know what a Y should be like?
David
D P Jones

Yeah - really.

I am pleased to say that they did not use www.mgytypes.org for any of the restoration process!

If you want to know about MG Y Types, there is only one place where you will be able to find the answers ... and if we dont have them, post a thread and have them answered very quickly by folk who care solely about MG Y Types without any other distractions.

There is a very nice but incredibly expensive YT for sale in the US at $79,000! I think its beeen around for somewhile but with supercharger and nice but unoriginal chrome wires it looks splendid. It has even had the orignal style of hood fitted. You can see it on www.hymanltd.

I'm sure you have probably seen it - though it obviously has never sold - rather like Sandy Henderson's YA convertible and a YT for sale at The Garage in Hampshire - the former for £11k and the later around £22k. I believe that the YT formerly owned by Dave Ivins is still for sale at Chelsea Cars at around £24k. Big asking prices but not selling - provenance maybe?

Jerry,
Not sure if we are talking about the same motor, but there is an MG YT for sale at the MG Barn in Shedfield.
I was there last Friday purchasing some parts for YB after a brake failure to the YB and spoke to the MD who said the YT was for sale at about £19k and they had interest being shown in the YT. I didn't ask to look at it so can't pass comment on its condition!
Richard
R E Knight

That's the one Richard - they have obviously dropped it to a more realistic price. I see in the current issue of Safety Fast 23.5k is being asked , so that's quite a drop. I think that it was the metallic green model that was owned by Glenn Whitehead and covered in an article in Classic Car Weekly about 2 years ago - it took part in the celebrations of Prince Phillips anniversary and was held in Windsor Park.

The YA Convertible was written about in both Safety Fast and the Octagon Car Club's magazine. It was sold at Auction at MG Silverstone in 2009 (?) it went for around £5- 6K plus buyers premium and VAT. It was a very well maintained car by the then owner, who undertook the original conversion, which is well thought through. There is a photograph in Lawrence's 'LTBY's' on page 243 and noted as Y6089. It shows how a convertible based on the Y might have been achieved more in the style of the prewar VA.Fitted with wire wheels it would be an excellent finish - better perhaps in my view than the 'bath tub' YT!

That is still for sale at MG Barn Ltd for £11,750, though who knows it might have been reduced in price.

Hope you got your brake parts Richard - are the cylinders fitted with s/steel inserts? You can also get parts from Moss as YB's are consistent with TD's and Brown and Gammons and of course the cheapest of the lot at Octagon.

Have fun

All the best

Jerry's absolutely correct the most expensive YT can be viewed at: http://www.hymanltd.com/search/details.asp?stockno=4358&suffix=25&recordcount=4

At 79,500 Dollars it certainly is the most expensive YT for sale. The Guarantee Plate has been replaced which is rather a shame, but the car appears on the YT Factory Records and is one of 42 known EXUs.

4 Y/Ts for sale and one Y in Hemmings Motor News http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/?adtype=carsforsale&makeFacet=MG&modelFacet=YA&modelFacet=YT&q=&price_min=&price_max=&year_min=&year_max=&range_zip=&distance=&categoryFacet= currently.

I have no connection or financial interest in any of these cars.

Just an update on the black MG YT. It sold on Ebay for $36,600. I was watching the car, and even talked to the owner in Connecticut. He was a fast talker, but he wanted me to buy it out right. After reading these post, I am glad I did not purchases it.
J Spears

J Spears, and anyone else for that matter - if you are seriously interested in a Y or Y/T you can do a lot worse than contact your local/closest International Representative to discuss a particular car. I would rarely venture an opinion on a car on the website but personally, the black one is so far wide of the mark of what a classic car is all about it wasnt even funny. That said, whoever did those "mods" (I wont call them improvements) to the car then had to recover an enormous amount of cash on the sale of it.

However, that said, if the new owner approaches us, the International MG Y Type Register is not here to condemn, nor to pass judgement and they will be as welcome as any other MG Y owner. If they feel so inclined we will certainly help them either enjoy the car as it is, or if they seek to modify it back to stock, we will all help them do that too - the IMGYTR is not here for anything other than the enjoyment of these great MGs.
