MG MG Y Type - YT Fuel tank
HI All Just starting a new thread as I managed to get my fuel tank out of the car yesterday. It appears in fairly good shape, ie no real rusty areas. It has a sheen of surface rust inside, and interestingly a number of small rocks fell out when I was shaking it around. It appears that the ends of the tank are soldered on. I am contemplating trying to get them off to clean the inside before I seal it. Has anyone else done work on their fuel tank. Thanks Joe |

If you study this upside down image of the inside of a Y-Type fuel tank, you will notice a fine gauze filter around the pickup pipe - beware of blocking this filter with any fuel tank "slosh" treatment, or you will not get any fuel out of the tank with any pump !. Agreed Tony - I have used the Moss kit though on MG Y and Z Magnette tanks with very good results and no ill effects to the pick ups by following the instructions provided. Paul |

Joe Any drum recyclers in your area I don't know what they use but drums come out squeaky clean inside might be worth asking what they use or maybe do your tank for you willy |

Recently pulled apart my ya tank to remove rust , needed to take both end caps off as there is a baffle in the centre as well as another around the float. If you go down this path you will also have to re-solder the seam that runs across the top. As tony stated there is a very fine brass mesh around pick-up tube so be very careful if going down the tank liner path. |

I took my tank out and sent it to a Rad shop where the owner took the ends off, media blasted the inside, welded it all backtogether and sealed the inside with a alcohol proof sealant. The tank was absolutley contaminated with rust and varnish, so it had to be done. Rad shop did an excellent job but it was fairly labour intensive.
I have sealed tanks before and have used "Bill Hirch" tank sealant, as it is impervious to alcohol fuels, and available through Aircraft Spruce. Aircraft Spruce is local to me so it is very handy. Sealant is still performing well with no issues 12 years later. .. CR |
