MG MG Y Type - YT Hood folding

After 18 months of working on my YT, I have got it back on the road and would like to know how to correctly fold the hood so it fits behind the rear seat.

I have two (2) hoods, both not original and made from heavier material. One has the rear window sewn in, whilst the other is zippered.

I have looked through LTBYs and other manuals, but can not find how to do it.

Dave Lawrence in LTBYs states the Hood stays connected to the body by the 'Lift the dot' studs.

TIA

Stuart,

It is explained with a diagram in the workshop manual, in the few pages that are specific to the YT.

I don't have a MG Y workshop manual, only those on the 2 CDs Paul sells.
I just checked a MG TD Workshop manual I have and it shows the procedure. Thank you for giving me a pointer where to look.

Stuart,
The info you need for the YT (it is different to the TD), is located at the back of the Owners Handbook, not the workshop manual. It is on the CD that PB sells.

The YT hood is fixed to the body in the nearly straight centre section of the back, not around the corners.

Original hoods had zipper rear windows, but they have been unavailable from suppliers for many years.

A few of us in the IMGYTR are researching original hood details at the moment, and when complete the details will be published on the website and provided to any supplier for free on request.

It is not in the Export Owners handbook (yxphbook.exe) and the yhomehbook.exe will not open from the CD nor the .pdf file. So, I would appreciate if someone could scan the page / instructions and send it me at lesley_stuart at bigpond dot com .

New long Lift the Dot studs arrived today from Woolies.

Stuart,
Try page 316 in the Maintenance Manual & Instruction Book.

It's in the back of my hard copy Handbook, but in the back of the CD Manual. There must have been different versions over the years.

Thank you for the advice. I have found the YT supplement. It was the one file I hadn't opened.

Paul, I will send a separate email.

A correction to previous post. All .exe files open .pdf files, but only one .pdf can be open at any one time.

I have updated the Hints and Tips page with some pictures sent in by Anton Piller to show how to fold the hood up.

Aaron and Paul, thank you. I am sure it will also be useful for others.

Hi Stuart,
You will find Anton's pictures very helpful, but a couple of other suggestions. When I stow my hood I do not fold the sides to a sharp point but instead have a flat edge around 300mm long and then I roll the hood rather than fold it and it drops nicely into the recess and there are less creases if you leave it down for a while. Also I have an unframed Zippered back window which I unzipper before lowering the hood, therefore I find it a good idea to lay a piece of soft fabric or towel into the recess first and then fold the cloth back over the window before lowering the hood so the window is protected and doesn't get scuffed. Maybe originally there was something similar in the recess anyway, I don't know.

On the topic of looking after the Perspex, Acrylic or whatever "Plastic" you have in your back window and side screens there is a great product called "Plexus" in aerosol cans that was developed by the aircraft industry for cleaning aircraft canopies. It is also well known to Boaters and Bikers for cleaning windscreens and visors so shop around chandlers and bike shops and get some, you will be amazed how much grime it removes.

I think I fold my YT hood a different way every time it gets tucked away.
I will be very interested to read the findings of the hood research group. My hood is seldom used and when it is up it fits where it touches and provides plenty of ventilation, so a replacement is due.
Today at the NEC Classic Car show I think I saw the best fitting hood on a YT that I have ever seen. Edward Vandykes newly resprayed YT was on display in the West Berkshire Classic Vehicle Club stand. The fit around the rear side screens was spot on with even the bottom corner push clip fitted on the near side. The tension was excellent and did not form any side stretch wrinkles like mine does. The front screens were not in place so I can't say how they fitted.
I will be interested to hear if the group solves the problem of getting a good front side screen fit with the roof both up and down. When up the tension causes the wind screen to slope back a little more and makes it encroache on the front side screens.
Four excellent Ys on display at the show today.

Peter,
Please post photos (if taken) of the four Y's on one of the sites, so we can all see them please. I was at work so could sadly not attend the NEC. Was the YT Edward's red or white (cream) YT?

Hi Peter V

Thank you for mentioning the research group's work into YT Hoods that we asked for help on from the YT community.

So far we have had an overwhelmingly ONE response from YT owners about their hood construction and fitting. I am also posting on the thread again to bring it to the top of the list to bring it to your attention. Please let us use the power of the internet to help, not only yourselves when it comes around to hood replacement time, but also others who currently have no hood and are looking to have one made to the best specifications.

Thank you

Edward's YT is the same colour as mine Richard a primrose cream. Sorry I am not a picture taker so nothing to post.

Peter, OK, I thought Edward may of had his red one there. I saw his cream one at the gathering of the Spring Run on the Sunday briefly, he didn't partake in the run if I recall correctly.

Paul, Are you want any details of hoods irrespective or originality, I know mine is not original like most I guess.

Edwards YT was the model that he imported from Oz about 18 months ago. The Judson s/chd car fitted with 15" w/wheels. As Peter mentioned the car has been resprayed a shade of sequioa cream. He has transfered the red interior from his other YT and fitted stainless steel wires which do set the car off well.. though I am aware that w/w on Ys are not to your liking. The hood is vyanide and is a good fit as Peter mentioned.

4 Ys present: Bernard Foad's two tone Y and our YT on the Octagon stand, Alan Chick's YB on the MGCC Stand and Edward Van Dykes YT on the West Berkshire Classic Car Stand.Pics of the cars on the Octagon are on Pete Moore's post on the Octagon FB account.

Good show and vbusy.

Do you mean the Octagon rather than owners club?

Just type MG Octagon Car Club Facebook page in your browser - it should come up quite easily.
