MG MG Y Type - YT Hoods

Tony Slattery, Dave Lawrence, Anton Pillar and myself are currently doing a lot of research into the weather protection equipment as fitted on the MG YT.

If you have an MG YT I would love to hear from you please by email preferably about your hood - was it fitted to the car when you got it, how good is the fit, and is it original? We have many other questions and would love to hear from you. The aim is to improve upon the knowledge base that we have currently in Let there be Ys.

You can use the email link on this post. Please do not use this post to denigrate any supplier though - this is NOT the intent here. The intent is to provide a helpful base going forward. You can be as vociferous as you like about a supplier in an email to me though if you are not happy!

Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible please.

The focus of our research at the moment is how the hood is attached to the rear bow, and if there are pop studs on the sides above the sidescreens.

We have the photos in the factory manuals, but photos of cars when they were only 2-3 years old indicate some differences that are important to durability of the hood.

We would especially like to see any photos of YT's from when they were near new.

Thanks in anticipation,

Hi Guys, Our YT hood is not original and is modern black vinyl but is a good fit. Fixing to the rear hood bow is via 2 self tappers and cup washers at the intersection of the longitudal and lateral seams.

There is no evidence of there ever being pop studs along the sides of the hood frame above the side screens. However I can appreciate why there might be because the hood tends to blow out in strong crosswinds at speed. What I do to combat this is have an eyelet hole in the inner hood flap just forward of where the side screens meet and have two small elastic straps with hooks (Ocky Straps) that will reach down to the rear side screen fixing knob on each side.

The very tatty salt and pepper hood that came with the car did have pop studs on the front flap into the windscreen frame between the wiper spindles. I did not refit these.

I did notice that on the inside of the rear hood bow I could see six small holes across the length of the bow. A pair at each end and two spaced apart mid section. Not sure what these where for? Fixing the curved metal strip that runs across the bow? There are of course rubbing blocks on the outside of the two rear hood arms.

So far we have had an overwhelmingly ONE response (above) from YT owners about their hood construction and fitting. I am posting on this thread again to bring it to the top of the list to bring it to your attention. Please let us use the power of the internet to help, not only yourselves when it comes around to hood replacement time, but also others who currently have no hood and are looking to have one made to the best specifications.

Please respond, as requested, by email to me on the link to my email as posted here.

Thank you

Hi Paul

Just putting together a response. Will take some pics tomorrow as I put the hood back up. It was down at the NEC and I drove home on Sunday night but took an unintended route home through Stechford and Yardley. A tad cool to say the least!

Fabric Flap 1

A little update regarding the fastening of the hood onto the rear bow of the hood frame:
NTG, who use a Canadian hood for template incorporate the fabric flap. In the attached picture, I highlighted the flaps edge with chalk for you. This is what I mean by saying "the flap needs to be underslung and folded up to be fastened to the inside of the bow by four screws". The flap needs to be a bit wider. to reach the fourth hole.

Regarding the 2 self tappers and cup washers at the intersection of the longitudal and lateral seams there ar two different minds. While I am sure that this is correct, one of the hood team members questions this idea.

I will send two more replies with different photos regarding the flap.

Regards
Anton

I wrote to you Paul with my experiences with the YT. Has anything come of it?

Still under discussion Jerry.

Reactivating post

My YTs hood frame is back from being powder coated, so now to get the hood made.

I am unclear how the hood is attached (if it is) to the rear bow. Anton, in your post you indicated you would post some more photos of how you have attached or wrapped hood around the rear bow. Can you please post some photos, drawings, details or send them to me at "lesley (underscore) stuart (at) bigpond (dot) com.

cheers

I too sourced my hood from NTG. I would say it fit about 90%. I ended up taking it to a local shop who re-cut and re-sewed for a better fit. Now it is about 95%. Nothing could be done around the windscreen as the fabric is/was a bit short. I also sourced the sidescreen fabric from NTG and "spliced" a little of the leftover fabric to fill the windscreen gap. Not Kosher but it helps to keep the rain out. Like anton. I screwed the "flap" to the rear crossbar. Hope this helps.
