MG MG Y Type - YT rear end?

I posted the following to the YA and Minor thread, but it might not get noticed there, so here it is:

I took a 4.3 rear end out of my ZB Magnette, and replaced it with a 3.9. Yes I know the ZB is supposed to be 4.55, but this one is definitely a 4.3 installed by a PO. Question, will it fit in my YT? If it will, I'll keep it; otherwise, I'll sell it.

' Confess I haven't even looked. My YT is a basket-case, stored safely, but I can't look under it right now. If anybody has a quick answer, thanks!

I don't know if a Magnette and Minor diff are interchangable, but if you read the article than you know what is involved and there's a list of suitable diff's. As the Magnette/MGB/MGA banjo diff's aren't listed I would think it is not suitable. Why don't you measure it or compare it to a Minor diff?

Willem,
Thanks! I'll do the measurements when I get access to the underside of the car.

Allen,
If you fit a YB/TD/TF rear axle to your car then yes the 4.3 Crown Wheel and Pinion can be fitted to these axles housings. In fact all the Z Magnette/ MGA and MGB ratios up to 3.9 will fit. The crown wheel bolts straight onto the YB/TD/TF differential carrier. With a bit of shimming and different pinion bearings plus the later fine spline drive flange you can have any ratio you like. I once had a Magnette 4.555 in my TD but it is still to low and few years ago replaced it with an MGB 3.9. A bit more work to fit a 3.9 in that crappy split axle but the result is well worth it. Unless your engine is a dog it will pull it easy!!! Richo YT3208

Rich,

Many thanks! Now I'll keep the 4.3, although I'm going to want a 3.9. Next step is to find the YB/TD/TF rear axle. Are they all the same width?

Allen, the YB,TD,TF rear axle housings are identical. Cheers Richo YT3208

Rich,

I haven't checked this in awhile. This is pretty late, but I do want to thank for your input. I'll keep the 4.3, although I'll probably want a 3.9. This project is behind a few others that are moving at a snail's pace. All I can do in the meantime is plan and accumulate the parts I'll need.

Allen

Allen: coming to this thread a bit late, and while I can't comment on the inner workings of diffs with any authority, the thing that struck me when thinking about your question is that the YB with its Nuffield hypoid axle runs on 15" wheels compared to the 16" wheels of the YA/YT.
And I believe - might be wrong here - the axle hub design and stud spacings for the 15" wheels are different... in other words, you may be able to fit the later axle but will need to change the wheels as well. And if that's true, the fronts will need to be changed to match... unless you're going for the hotrod look of course! Does anyone else know more here?
Tim Griggs

Tim,

You're right, the rear axle will fit but you'd have to convert the front hubs and four wheels because of the stub spacing.
Last week I heard of a Dutch YA with an MGA rearaxle, front MGA discbrakes and MGA 15" wirewheels. Maybe not everyones cup of tea but it does show there a more roads that lead to Rome (an old Dutch proverb).
