MG MG Y Type - YT Rear Hood Attachment

Hi guys

I was rereading LTBYs concerning how the Hood was attached at the rear and realised I have been misreading how it was attached.

David Lawrence in LTBYs states that there was an inner strip of fabric which was held to the body by the nuts (and I take it washes) of 8 bolts and 5 long Lift the Dot studs (middle and 2 each side).

David also states there is no certainty as to what the bolts were other than the nuts were the same as for the Lift the Dot studs which are 2BA.

I am seeking information on what bolts / set screws you have use. Stainless steel or Chrome and either hex bolts or set screws with a Countersunk, raised countersunk, dome, cheese head or pan head. My suppliers smallest length is 1/2 inch which I think may be a bit long.

If counter sunk, I would suggest a cup washer was used similar to under the Lift the Dot studs.

TIA

I just finished fitting a new hood to my Y/T. I used countersunk 2BA screws in combination with cup washers, spring washers and nuts.
The inner strip of fabric is not held by the nuts but by the countersunk heads and dished washers. All the nuts (those for the set screws and those for the Lift the Dots) face forward into the passengers compartment. please refer to the attached photograph showing the right rear corner.
I used plated 2BA screws from either Woolies or Namrick based the UK - probably 1/2" long.
I do not understand your last sentence, regarding cup washers underneath the Lift the Dot studs. All I use under these studs is a white neoprene washer (whenever they are screwed directly to the body work) in order not to damage the paint.

I recently have done extensive research, together with the Y Register, regarding the fabric hood, its "zipped-in" rear window and the method of fastening it to the hood's rear bow above the rear window (from the inside). Hopefully, I will get around to publish the findings, on this website, within the next couple of weeks.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for your reply. After reading your post and viewing the photo, I have reread the section in LTBYs. I thought, incorrectly, that the inner fabric strip was attached on the inside of the body. You are correct. I will order Chrome countersunk set screws.

The previous owner of my YT, had replaced all set screws with Lift the Dot studs and one of the 2nd hand Hood I purchased had Lift the Dot clips all around the rear. So both were wrong. The other Hood (with a rear zippered window flap) which I am now looking at using, only has the required 5 Lift the Dot clips.

In your photo I notice what seems to be an additional attaching set screw from what Dave describes in LTBYs. Is this original?

I do not have to worry about damaging the paint work, as my YT paint appears to be original with a large number of chips and crazing etc.

Can you post a photo of how you attached the hood spacer strips to the rear of the YT.

I replied this morning to your mail but aparently my text never went through (could be that the attachment was too big).

The additional set screw came in when the previous owner fastened the spacing strips with two set screws instead of one only - a feature that I liked and made use of.
The two stripps are sandwidched between what you call the inner strip and the rear body panel.

The previous owner also used 2 extra LtD pegs in order to better be able to tighten the hood. Another feature I copied.

Can you please show a photo of the rear section of your hood - especially the rear zippered window and its suround?

Sorry I will not be able to take a photo of the rear of my hood (and rear window) until next week, as I am away from home and my YT. My hoods are not original.

Any photo I take next week will not show the hood on the car. (awaiting c/s set screws, need to make the windscreen timber and add new spacer straps.

Attached is photo of the exterior of the rear of the hood. It is 2nd hand - purchased through Tony Slattery.

Let me know your email address if you need a better quality photo.

Thank you Stuart

Looks interesting but not very "original". It seems that in the past not many trimmers bothered about originality.
It's about time, I publish the results of the research that was conducted together with the assistance of the members of the International MG Y-Register.....

At present, I am battling the side screens of my YT - not an easy task to make a "perfect " fit :o)
