MG MG Y Type - YT Rear Window

Can we start a discussion on the original treatment of the rear window in a YT.

All the period photos I can find show no surround like that which appears on the TC.

Was the zip out rear window in the YT the reason there was no "solid" frame or window ?.

Primarily it was zip-out i believe to enable it to be folded away first, before the hood and hood irons so that it did not get creased or damaged when stowed.

A second reason was so that the roof could be used (in hot climates such as South Africa and Australia and the hotter parts of the US and other export markets) as a Surrey shade. Zipping out the rear window and not fitting the side screens creates a nice through draught when you are driving.

This second reason is not to be confused of course with the damp through draught you get when the side screens are fitted and it is raining hard - LOL!!

I don't know if you have saw the photos of my parents wedding in YT4061 Body #45347/676, from memory late 1949 model? The car was owned by mum's brother Raymond Barclay who bought the car new, wedding was in June 1953 so car was around 3-4yrs old. In the photos you can see a frame and the zip arrangement. Unfortunately The hood was a bare frame when we acquired the car, none of the rear window was present. We have 3 photos of the car used at the wedding, I will see if I can add them to site.
