MG MG Y Type - YT rebuild progress
Hi everyone
I am working through my YT rebuild slowly. The body is out getting the body work done. Its going to be a bit expensive. Both rocker panels need completely rebuilding and a few other patches and repairs are necessary. I have been working on components in the mean time and may be looking for some parts. My master cylinder does not look rebuildable as the bore is to corroded. Would anyone have a useable one they would sell? I also am rebuilding the jackall system. I have the jacks all apart and the front ones are in overall good shape and I think I can fix them. The rear ones not so much the outer tube on one is corroded and while not through, it looks like it would be weak. The rams were left partly extended for years and the lower part is rusty. I know I can buy new rams from NTG, but thought I would try and see if there are any out there that someone would sell. I was just given some photo of my car by the family it came from and I will post some of them soon. More photo's of the TD style dash the car came with. One further note, I have found another YT for sale in eastern Canada if any one is interested, I can pass on the info. Cheers. Joe |

Will be interesting to see the dash, You do realise Y tourers had a dash different to the sedans,? and it looks similar shape to a TD dash |

Send you master cylinder to C&C in Holland - they work miracles. See their link on https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/links.shtml#Brake_/_Friction_Systems. I have not found a US supplier that can come close to their ability which is why we do not have one on the site. M/C for Y and Y/T are unique to Ys so having yours rebuilt is the best option. A second hand one will probably need rebuilding anyway. If the sleeves are only corroded on the outside, consider taking them to a crank rebuilder and having them build up and then turned down. Email me with details please on the Y/T in Eastern Canada in case we do not already know of it. Thanks and best wishes Paul |

Willie, I don't own a YT but I always thought the YT dash was the same as the TC. Happy to be corrected people. |

You're probably right Ian I think TD's had a glovebox. My comment was more to point out that the tourer dash was a different dash to the sedans I'd hate for Joe to be thinking his tourer should have a sedan type dash -- that was the point i was trying to subtly make just in case. Cheers willy |

TDs did have a glove box ... however at the special request of one importer to the US/Canada the factory made a small batch (6 we think possibly) with both speedometer and tachometer in front of the driver and glove box in front of the passenger. See https://www.mg-cars.org.uk/imgytr/interestingys.shtml#Unique_Features_in_production_Ys and the second item under that section for some more details :) Paul |

Paul I found this company in Canada, and after a conversation with them and sharing some photos of my MC, they assure me they can rebuild it if I supply the rebuild kit, including resleeving the bore with a stainless sleeve. They quoted around $350 cdn to do it. I think I'm going to give them a try. Joe http://www.johnstuartpowerbrake.com/ |

Thanks Paul regarding YT/TD dashboard. You learn something new every day. |

Joe: I had my master cylinder rebored and fitted with a stainless sleeve decades ago and the result was excellent... except that the machinist forgot to drill the crucial hole from the cylinder to the reservoir which allows fluid to return once the pedal is released. This caused endless brake headaches until I discovered the root of the problem. It's a tricky drilling because with the sleeve in place it requires a very long, skinny and therefore fragile drill. Wheel cylinders are much simpler to renew. Good luck! |

Your choice entirely Joseph ... but I am not too sure where to point you to get the essential "rebuild kit, including resleeving the bore with a stainless sleeve".
C&C would be a one stop - and all you do is send them your master cylinder (I would totally suggest via FedEx or UPS and not Canada Post) and they will supply everything and return it to you using FedEx or UPS for not a heck of a lot more. This is why we recommend them. I have personally used them several times to rebuild my M/Cs on my Y and YT and also several of those for customers who have asked me to work on their Ys too over the years. I live in Washington State USA and as I said earlier despite years of research I have not found anyone close to C&Cs performance. They even drill the hole Tim Griggs refers to and test their work before shipping it back. Send them the piston as well as the M/C. As I say - one stop and done. Paul |
