MG MG Y Type - YT reversing light

Hi all,
Is the lens for this available anywhere?.

I think it is clear for the reversing lamp and red for the tail lamp. There is the clear window towards the number plate stioll.

The glass lens for the reverse/tail is clear glass, and the tail light section is painted on the inside with red paint.

I may have a spare clear glass lens - will check tomorrow.

I am not aware of anyone selling clear glass lenses. I keep a lookout at swap meets or ask old auto electricians what they might have in their stores - sometimes you get lucky.

Kevin, If Tony doesn't have a lens, NTG sells them but a bit expensive at over 20 pound.

I changed my reversing D Lamp to a brake lamp to cater for modern traffic and installed a small LED reverse lamp under the rear bumper.

Hi all,
Why I enquired is that my thoughts were to get the D-lamps as near original as possible. Hence the clear section for the lens. Then add direction indicators , reflectors and extra brake lights on the rear at each side. The one brake lamp would be a bit lonely otherwise.

So if I can get a lens, I would probably go down that path. Tony, what did you find?

I didn't find it listed in NTG's site.
Stuart, The plan to leave the lens red and put a smallish reversing light under the bumper is attractive too.

As an aside, my health is deteriorating rapidly I fear, so may have to pass the whole shebang on. (Where is it at? chassis blasted and repainted, body all rust cut out, repainted in red two pack (wow,), shocks rebuilt, all suspension rebuilt, gauges restored by Otto ( curtesy of Tony's recommendation), new floor boards of course, brake light switch, new clutch and driven plate, timing chain, radiator serviced, shell and slats away being chromed, carbs rebuilt professionally, plus lots of bits bought. ) All of which has been good to do, so no regrets no matter what.)

Kevin,
Sorry to hear about health problems. Keep weel and safe as best as possible.

NTG have used all red and red/clear D lamp lens shown on the YA Lamps page.

Hi Kevin,
Sorry to hear about your health.
No time in the shed today - a day trip to the big smoke came up. I will check tomorrow (Friday) and let you know.

Hi all,
thanks for the replies.
Yup , I finally found the NTG lens. And I note the asking price for an all red one, (or which I have one new and two used, which will be surplus to requirements anyway if I do go down the path with the half clear lens) is around $19 each.
Maybe I could even recoup something there anyway. I'd be happy enough to send them all to Tony as well, rather than have them just sit in the shed here.

So
1 it's either one from Tony,
or
2 one from NTG,

Or
3 stay with the all red one I have and add another lamp.

I'll wait till Tony gets some clear air, but there is a path forward no matter what. Which is good.

Thanks for the help and encouragement.

Hi Kevin
Just wondering if your have tried removing the red paint from one of the lens? Just a suggestion as you satte you have 3 red lens. Have you tried thinners, acetone, or paint stripper?

Hi Stuart.
not on a new lens in the replacement lamps I bought. .
But on one of the old ones that came with the car.

The outer edge is clear-ish, so that did hint that the lens may be clear with red paint.

I tried two different types of paint stripper. That had no effect. Then I tried brake fluid. That too had no effect.
I haven't tried acetone as don't have any on hand at moment, but would worry that it would attack the lens . Are they glass or plastic?

They feel like plastic. So is acetone safe?

regards KGM

K G Mills

Hi Stuart,
me again.
When I look at one lens it could be plastic, but oddly has no scratches or marks.
When I "clink" the two together, they do sound more like glass than not.

So probably glass. So acetone is the next step.

What about wifes nail polish remover which is expensive Acetone. worth a try. From memory, I thought they were glass.
Stuart Duncan

Ok Kevin,
I have one on the YT and one for the YA, so 1 is spare (hope I never need one).

Send me a message or email & make me an offer.

I used to give stuff like this away, until I saw someone selling what I gave them on eBay. Now it helps keep my cars on the road while my retirement savings dwindle away.

Can do Tony, but where do I go for your email address?

Kevin,
Tony included his new email address in the thread of his name.

I would be stunned to hear of Acetone changing the colour of glass - sounds like Alchemy to me.

Good Luck

Hi Tony,
I have tried an email to the address you said works.
Don't know how successfully. I have a number of bounced emails right now, where the recipients' servers advise the accounts' inboxes are full or the servers are too busy.

Please let's know if I succeeded or not.

Hi Kevin,
Most of my email addresses are being hit with hundreds of spam emails every day and there seems to be no way of stopping them. As fast as I delete them, more arrive when I sleep. You can block the senders address, but they just change them and they keep coming. Very time wasting and frustrating.

I have just replied to your one email that came through.

Cheers
