MG MG Y Type - YT Tacho reduction gearbox

Does anyone have a tacho gearbox handy, that can count the number of teeth on the gears inside.

I just wish to confirm that the teeth ratio is 24/54 giving an overall ratio of 2.25/1

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Hi Tony

I am using just a standard TD one. How do I open it up ... without trashing it?

You will need to drill out the rivets. Don't do it unless you have a good reason (like lubrication issues) to pull down the gearbox.

Easy enough to replace the rivets by making replacements on the lathe if you can't fins any the correct size & length.

Hi Tony

Guess what - at US$138 for a replacement part from Abingdonsparesllc.com I think you are out of luck from me!

If you look on eBay.com they do come up once in a while under MG TD spares.

Sorry but I dont have the ability to make the rivets to put it back together. Now if you would like me to send it to you and you do the necessary and send it back ...

You can buy just the gears from Abingdon Spares and these gear boxes are made by Richfield Speedograph in UK. They sell direct too. Phil Marino in Riverside can bush the shaft for much longer life. Another trick is to fab a bracket that fastens under the grease fitting to the back of the dynamo to hold the gearbox in proper position.........

Thanks for those suppliers details - what a great resource this worldwide fraternity is.

Can you explain your thoughts and details on the reatining bracket you mention. What is the correct position for the tacho gearbox ?.

I have just collected two gearboxes that need new gears, so your help is most appreciated everyone.

cheers from Down Under

Hi Tony

I too was curious to learn more and so asked Terry to supply me with more details. These have been added to the Hints and Tips page and noted on a supplemental note to my original ones on the News page with a link.
