MG MG Y Type - YT top hose

I have been on ebay checking out the length of the top hose on a yt, the length of the hoses varies by one inch. Can one of you knowledgeable people tell me the length and if a TC is the same?

Thanks from a new YT owner (YT4319),
Bob

Hi Bob
Where in our sunny state are you located?

My YT (4310) is in my shed (3km away), so I can not measure the hose. It is not a standard top hose.

I measured the gap, plus the hose indenture on the thermostat housing and enough to get a clamp or two on the radiator pipe. Then went scrounging around the auto shops for a pipe of the correct diameter and cut a piece down to the length I needed.

Hi Bob,
I measured two top hoses and they are both 110 mm long. NTG lists the same top hose for TB, TC, TD and Y series.

I have arrived back from my UK holiday / shopping trip and measured my top hose. It is over 50 years old and its lenght is 122mm long not 110mm as supplied today. When checking on ebay the same manufacture lists a hose for Y cars from 1951 to 1953 at 4.5 inches( part number 354 ) but a hose for Y,s from 46 to 53 at 5.25 inches long( part number 157 ). The hose on YT4319 is the correct shape with the bulge. I will have a read of Let there be Y,s

The length of the top hose is not critical as the cooling system is not pressurised and forces are not conducive to then slipping off.

Fitting the longer hose without removing the radiator is difficult, but not impossible. Perhaps the shorter hoses now being supplied are a result of customer feedback on the dramas encountered when fitting.

The 110mm hose can be fitted by removing the thermostat, which most will agree is easier than removing the radiator.

Just my thoughts.

After much unsuccessful pushing and pulling I concluded that the best way to fit the top hose is first unscrew the bypass elbow from the large thermostat casting then unbolt this from the cylinder head. It sounds a lot of work but it saves time in the end, and the new top hose will not be damaged in fitting it. Bryan
