MG MG Y Type - YT Tourer

Hello Gentlemen

I had a very interesting conversation today with a long time MG collector who has a YT Tourer that has been sitting for many years. He wants to see the car restored and offered me the car for free. I had a look and it is in reasonable shape, the paint is peeling and it obviously will need a full restore. I have previously done a full restore on a TD, and subsequent to that an E-type. I know little of these cars. There does not seem to be significant rust that I could see. obviously it could be worse than what I saw. Are body panels available? The mechanicals appear to me very similar to the TD. Any advise or comments would be welcome in helping me make this decision. I'm 67, and was not looking for another restoration project, but how do I say no? Cheers.

Go for it !.

You will get all the advice and encouragement you need on this BBS and all sorts of information on the IMGYTR website & MGCC Y-Register site.

There are YT owners around the world currently restoring cars too, so don't hesitate to ask questions.

The car is virtually identical to the TD mechanically, and there are some repair panels available. The YT is the rarest post-war MG Model & the only 4-seat Tourer.

Good Luck

Hello
i have never done something before
but
it runs well
the sills are done, the wheel arche and some more

you can see the story here:

https://www.mgexp.com/forum/t-series-and-prewar-forum.46/mg-ya-no-1675-from-1948.4022768/

because i have a TA too and not so much time to look here and there

if you need details ask me, or look to the story
so you will be able to make them by yourself

you get the panels, but if they fit exactly ?
so i have done all by myself
more fun too

now i have so much experience, that i will be able to make the surround of the back

you need some tools, but all togehter it is sheaper to buy the tools then the panels.
the sheet metal for the sills and the back panel is zinc plated, so much better then the original

Joe,
Great opportunity at only 67 and in your prime. We would like to see a photo if you could post one and also the chassis number so we can check if it is a known car. There are a few parts that are individual to a YT but if your car is complete then you probably have them. The mechanics are more aligned to the TC actually. You need to buy a copy of "Let There be Ys" by David Lawrence. which explains all. Out of print but available on disc from IMGYTR. The MGCC Y Reg site offers tech advice and also has plenty of technical reference. https://www.mgccyregister.co.uk/ We also have a Face Book Group that it would be worth joining. https://www.facebook.com/groups/320184455362224/

I agree go for it. Lots of help available and parts if needed are available as well. More YT's in Canada than other Y's and if you do get it register it on the Y registry site.

Joe,
I have a YT that is a project for sale and I am considering parting it out. So I have a number of parts available. The cars are somewhat unique, but not too hard to work on. Brake M/C is unique a rebuild kits are available. Wheel cylinders are robust and cup seals are available at NAPA. Dust seals can be re-used.

Don't be afraid to get in-touch if you need help.

C.R. Tyrell, thanks for replying, I had another look at the car today, and we are going to pick it up next week. The worst problems appear to be the interior and the top. I would be very interesting in hearing what you have for sale. rv4flyer@gmail.com if you want to go off the site. Where in Ontario are you?

Further to my post earlier today, the current owner of the YT says that this car is one of four that were ordered with a TD dash as a special order by the dealer in Toronto and sold that way new. I checked today and the dash does seem to be TD and not like the photo's seen in the one book I have. Both the large instruments are in front of the driver.

Yes there are a couple of TD style dashed YTs around but not many for sure! I would say go ahead and buy it. The IMGYTR will fully support you in the rebuild process and although interior retrim androof/side screens will not be cheap I am currently looking to getting my YT done so there may be scalar economies to be made there ... especially as the IMGYTR are looking to have a specially commissioned run of real original "Salt and Pepper" material made up.

Drop me a note off line.

Hello again. I recovered this car yesterday and I have to say it is in better condition that I expected. It is now in dry storage awaiting some space at my home. I have to sell a mini to free up space. Photo's for info

Hi Joe

Many thanks for the Registration and I will process that today. Glad it is better than you thought!

Last we knew this car was black LOL!

Though I would add a little update. My son and I have been to the cold storage where we took the car after recovering it and have taken a few things apart to see a bit better what we are dealing with.

The sills are mostly gone, so some work is required there, the fenders all look good, or at least repairable.

We removed the seats and the floors (I am going to need seat sliders, they are not with the car) The parts of the frame we can see look very good. The floor of the tool box in the back is gone as well. The engine and areas under the bonnet look quite good. The engine seems to be stuck although we didn't try hard to get it to turn over. Put some oil down the plug holes to see if that helps the next time we are there.

I'm quite happy that many of the parts, windshield, engine, frame, front suspension etc., look very familiar after restoring a TD. I'll post some photos when I get them off my phone.

Cheers.

I have a pair of original seat slider rails and probably some of the brass strips too if you need them Joe.

Email me off line if you are interested in them.

I too am restoring a 1950 YT. Currently chassis redone with engine rebuilt and installed, had the wrong oil pump so the steering column didn’t fit, now have a proper oil pump being rebuilt along with the distributor and then the engine will be complete and ready for test run.

Body is painted and on chassis, doors hung with good fit. This process has dragged out over 10 plus years, due to multiple unforeseen circumstances!

Currently I have a problem in that I missing the toeboard and the transmission cover I don’t know if anyone has the parts or any indication of where these parts might be available, I would appreciate very much hearing about it. I think that the toe panel from any Y or YT or even probably a YB would fit. TD TF toe panel is about 6 inches too narrow. Abingdon spares calls the part a scuttle ramp, and for theTC, it is part 29 on page 63 in their catalog.

Probably need the TC transmission cover.

thank you, Richard Drewyer
R. G. Drewyer

I have a spare transmission tunnel, but the cost of freight and time to get there currently would rule it out.

I have a toeboard that is rusted at one end that could be salvaged, or I could draw up the dimensions and you could have one made locally ?.

Hopefully you will find the parts you need closer to home.

Hello
at this time i am restoring my new old YA
yesterday i cleaned the transmission tunnel
dirt and rust everwhere,
now it is clean
i think easy to make by yourself

my running bords are also really rusty
i will be able to remake them
but i think better to make them new

has somebody done it by himself

i have a lot of tools here, also a small english wheel
never done such a big part
so how to do it
first turn it around a round steel
then at the inside with the strecher to get the curve
and outside with the wheel to strech it also ?????

some steel to try it here ;-)

today cleand the right front wing,3 hours work
some welding at the end, but nearly ready to spray
FT Franz

FT Franz, Thanks for posting....unfortunately my work on the YT is not happening because of the isolation we are all experiencing right now. I will have to make sills and other parts when I get at the car. I'll post photo's and show you and others what I have when I can.

Joe Hine
J.D. Hine

if you haven t seen it
here are a lot of pictures of what i heve done
perhaps it helps you
it is a YA so a little bit different
all sills made by myself, also the wheel arch
and the last part in the back

Hello
take off the running boards an d the front and rear fender and you what the condition of the car is.
i think most cars have rust on this parts
the rear fender has problems in the front as you can see in my pictures
but
i have never used a english wheel , and in the first run i was able to make a new sheet metal for the front of the rear wing
not ready in the moment, less time, but it will work
both running boards are rusty, so i will make new one too, got some sheets of car metal for 13 euro a 1m2, now 4m2 in my garage in order to practise
also the rear lid can be doen by yourself.
do it
so if you need information mail me
