MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - 5000rpm in 5th
Now I know what speed my ZS180 does in 5th at 5000rpm. Two and a half inches past the legal speed limit on the speedo. Great fun roaring up the A1 north bound from the A14 saturday evening. Quite often do 4-4500 revs, but wondered how fast it goes at 5000. |

Was that on the 4 lane bit? |
Kelvin |
in the 260 this would be escape velocity!! |
Neil |
Jeff, If you have the gearbox & tyre spec, you can work it out.......one of the sites with the calc. on is www//race-technology.com.......their utilities page has all this info, plus gearchange speeds. Mike |

Kevin Yep it was the 4 lane bit. Michael I know what speed it does at 5000rpm don't need to work it out |
Jeff Patterson |
Jeff, did you subtract the inbuilt error margin of say 10% !, I have yet to find a speedo that does not give exaggerated speeds the faster you go !, a decent GPS would give you a more accurate figure . Mike |

23.2mph per 1000rpm so assuming accuracy of tacho (usually reasonably accurate and ignoring minor variation for tyre size and growth as spoeed rises and your looking at 116mph. The car is slightly over geared so that maximum speed is achieved approx 500rpm under maximum power point, this is done to aid economy without hurting acceleration too much, and also to enable the ZS to feature a top speed under that of the ZT190 for marketing reasons. Now lads your getting to technical for me. Roger The speedo was about 115-120 ish, not perfect I know, but it will do for me. The car was saynig to me, 'go on more more' and I was going to go for it, but, as ever the careful driver got in the way. Oh hum, good fun though going up the A1 with a big grin on. Jeff |

In 1966 ,in the afternoon, driving a 911 I (legally) accompanied an Alfa 2600 for 50 miles down the M1 at speeds of between 100 and 120 mph Those were the days! |
andrew |
SO what is 5000rpm in 5th in the Zt260 ? I dont intend to test it by the way it could be 150-160 ish? |
Neil |
the speedo on the ZS180 is particularly accurate - checked mine against GPS and always only 1 or 2 mph out right up to about 130, never had it beyond that either on track or abroad. |
David |
Very approx bhp and top speed are following mph bhp 140 176 150 215 160 258 170 307 Paul |
Paul |
So 160ish that'll do! |
Neil |
The 260 is limited to 155mph. Tony |
Tony |
ZT with 29.7mph per 1000rpm gives a theoretical max of 178.2mph @ 6000rpm, but to achieve that speed would require 400bhp to be produced at that rpm, and a small modification to eliminate the speed limiter! Interestingly a ZT-T needs 415bhp to achieve the same. Rog |
Roger Parker |
so the supercharger as used by Dreadnought and the "small modification" gives you 178.2mph! That'll do!!!! |
Neil |
About 5-7 mpg so you will need to take a credit card. |
Paul |
......and a suitcase of clothes for your night at the Police station. |
george |
sound like fun ...a bit of risk involved |
