MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - A New MG

I am picking up a brand new MG ZS+ today. (Ignition blue with a big fat f*ck off spoiler!! Brilliant!!)
Am I mad?!!
Will I be able to get it serviced, parts, warranty, etc, etc?? Dealer says that warranty is backed by RBS, but am making sure I have written proof of this before signing.
Emma Foster

Hi Emma

Mad is relative, and it depends on your priorities. On the one hand, from all I've read, ther is a bit of uncertainty about servicing, warrantees etc., but on the other hand, this may be your last chance to buy a brand spanking new MG. (I certainly hope not!)

It has been said that most car purchase decisions are made on emotion and then justified by logic, so I guess you should just do what your heart is telling you.

In South Africa we are being told that our warrantees / servicing will be unaffected because they are covered by the local importers who are in good nick financially.

Good luck with the ZS!

Mark.

Cheers Mark,

I never thought about it like that, but yeah, it may be the last chance I get to buy a brand new MG!

Went to the garage "just to look", determined not to buy a new car, as every car I buy is always on impluse and always the first one I see instead of shopping around. But the ZS was the first one I saw and I fell in love with it and the deal was so good (half the list price) that I could hardly refuse!

I'm pretty sure the warranty should be safe with the RBS, but if not, what the hell!! It's an MG! It's not going to break down (touch wood)! It's not as if it's a Landrover (am part exing a Landrover because it's being in the garage 5 times in the 7 months I've had it. The bag o'sh*te).
Emma Foster

I can't comment on the ZS, as they are not sold here, but my ZT has done about 40,000 trouble free miles, and I love her so much more than the boring Audi A4 I had before her. Let me know how it goes. (e-mail attached)

My MG's been out of production since 1979. I do around 5-8K miles a year and enjoy every minute of it.

Even enjoy the fact they don't make them any more....

Warranties were previously covered by MG Rover for the three years that the warranty was valid. PwC have announced that there is not the money available to continue supporting this. However in the short term you have the normal sale of goods cunsumer cover that says that the product you buy has to be of a quality commensurate with how the product is advertised. So a car with its various features will have to perfrom as described otherwise it is not of that quality.

You purchase of the car is a legal contract with your dealer and it is they who have to ensure that the car meets these standards. Hence the fact that dealer have said they will be supporting their customers who have bought cars off them and doing their warranty work. They also have said they will not support owners who have bought elsewhere to amplify the point.

Third party warranties (insurance cover essentially) are easy to obtain and the variation in cover and cost is wide. As most nearly new cars falling outside the original manufacturers warranty are sold with one of these moving the cover back up the age range of the cars is not a real issue. These I am sure will be supplied as standard from dealers to reduce their potential risk for covering repair costs.

I have also been involved in the early discussions of looking to set up a specific MG only warranty to cover people, like myself with two MGs under 12 months old, in a greater depth so when hundreds of miles away from your supplying dealer you still have cover if something goes wrong.

The Warranty supply industry is so very well aware of the hole that now exists and there will be a wide number of introductions to fill the gap, some of which have started with offers like 20% off, but do look at cover and premiums! The current discussions ongoing are complex and will take a little time to gell into an available deal, which is why I am waiting for the dust to settle.

Hey Emma,

How big are your tits?
Jonesy

I must apologize to everyone - I realise my lack of size in the man-hood department causes me to write such inane comments as the one above and I promise to try an curb this.
Jonesy

My MG ZS is great but am having a bit of a problem with it... Picked it up from the garage and on the way home realised the rear window demist is not working. In fact the button doesn't even light up like the fog lights do. Can't find fault in the fuses, just think it is loose wiring, but it's bloody brand new!!
Rang garage the next day and they booked the car in to be looked at. Then the day after that the sales man rang and said until Rover go under completely they can only do "emergency" warranty repairs!!
Went into the garage last week and was told that they no longer know what is happening with the warranty/repairs so cannot do anything about it! What a load of cr*p! I have a written document that says the warranty will be stood by Dixons/RBS and under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, they have sold me faulty goods and they should be repaired/replaced/refunded.
Have contacted the Citizens Advice Bureau and am awaiting a reply from them, as to what my rights are, but am thinking of going to my finance company and getting them to hassle Dixon about it, as they will have more weight behind them.
Am well pi$$ed, but it has not put me off MG's. It still rocks!
Oh, and Jonesy, from Coventry... BIG!
Emma Foster

Glad you got the car, and are enjoying it apart from the demister. Are you terrorising the BMW drivers? I wonder if Jonesy drives a flash BMW to compensate for his small equipment... :-)
Mister T

Jonesey is known as a damn nuisance.
His comments DRIVE US all mad.
(although his apology above may be a hopeful sign)

Emma

I had trouble with my Demister and it turned out that the wire which plugs into the heating element in the glass had simply unplugged. Check the plugs at the heating element on the left and right edges of the rear window.

Worth a look :o)
