MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Best Discounts on New MG Zeds

Anyone able to say what is the best CURRENT discount option for new MG Zeds? I have in mind those discounts for club members and/or ex-ARG Employees etc discussed at length on here sometime back.

TIA

JMcF

Those discounts still apply John, u just need to phone either of the main MG clubs, depending on your membership!! It was upto 3k off a 180 I think... ?

There was a guy on another forum selling privatley at under 10k this week

I bought an ex demo as U know, and saved
somewhere in the region of 3k (pre discount scheme)

Full discounts are available for Rovers and MGS on www.xpower-mg.com

There is no joining fee. The stipulation is that you are a Forum member for 3 months! Not bad eh!

Thanks for the info. Without a part exchange, I have been offered 17.5 and 20% by several dealers off list prices including any extras provided I'm a club member. Currently I'm a member of the MG M Group which I believe is affiliated to the MGOC. In effect, that 20% discount works out rather more as you don't pay the additional 17.5 Value Added Tax (VAT) on the full list price. A very worthwhile saving ....

Anyone here bought an MG Zed or Rover recently under this discount arrangement?
John McFeely

It depends which model you want as you say some are 17.5%,some 13%,15% or even 20%.
Joe

I went to my local dealer yesterday "Dixons", they offered me an MGZR list price £9999 at £8999. This is a job lot they have purchased and need to be registered before the end of the month. On this deal I could not use my club discount or get the free fuel allowance, which on the MGZR base model would be about £700 club discount and about another £700 of fuel allowance. making a price of £8599
The club discounts do get higher for the more expensive models.
Bob

John,

Mail me with the exact model your thinking of and I can let you know the specific discounts available for the current period. (to 31st March)

Club discounts are the same as Employee, although employees rightly get some extra benefits. The same rates apply to all Clubs, Groups etc which have been allowed the appropriate access. Discount is given off the list price of new cars that are specifically built to your order.

Factory fitted accessories attract the same rate of discount as applied to the base car and only the extra deals and offers applicable to the Employee scheme and published with the prices apply. Hence the free fuel offer does NOT apply to cars bought on the dicount scheme. (A point which I have specifically queried direct with the Employee sales office)

It follows that the best use of the discount is to carefully check the applicable discounts and chose a model with a high start discount and then spec it up. That way there is almost no chance that you will find a dealer offer on a 'new' car at the same spec near to the Club discount price

Many offers at dealers relate to cars bought on special purchases, bulk lots, etc and whilst many of these will be new and unregistered vehicles they will not fall within the scheme. However, with such a competitive market at the moment there will be instances where some will find that one of these will be to their desired spec and so they may well be able to get a better deal.

As Bob says, low discounts apply to the bottom end of the ranges. For example discounts for the ZR105 is only 7% on the 3 door and 9% on the 5 door. The ZR+TD attract only 5% and 7% for the 3 and 5 door variants, so deals at Dealers are clearly much easier to find. At the other end of the scale the Petrol engined ZS 4 door cars attract 20%, with 2.5% to 4% less on the 5 doors. Diesels are 15% and 13% respecively. The effect of 20% off a ZS 180 4 door is over 3300 pounds and whilst the amount off a 5 door 180 is only just over 2500 pounds (only??) the result is that both 180 models come out with prices within 23 pounds of each other.

The king of current discount is the ZT 180 Sports Auto at over 22% that equates to 4800 pounds off, closely followed by ZT+190 which has over 21% for over 4500 pounds. There is a marked difference with ZT-T discounts, apart from the ZT-T+190 that has a similar rate to the saloon, that overall would tend to show the ZT-T is a better seller.

Lastly note that not all current MG model variants are on the scheme. For example none of the ZRTD 115 or ZSTD 115 yet appear, although they may well do at some time in the future.

John,

Are you sure that MG'M' group membership qualifies for the club discounts being offered to the MGOC & MGCC? "Affiliation to the MGOC" may not hold water with MGR..........

Roger,

Many thanks for that. I'll email seperately with the ZS full spec the family have decided to go for. No immediate hurry ... want to get a decent MG reg.no.first provided DVLA not too pricey. Looking for delivery March-April latest with 03 no. I've left my listing and brochure copy at work and will contact you when I get it.

Martin,

The wording on the Privileged Purchase Application merely asks for club memebership no., club name and the signature of the secretary.

The details of the scheme as outlined on MGCC (I am a member but not as long as MG M 1998) page "MG Rover Privilege Purchase Plan" does not specify any particular MG clubs. Here I reproduce the opening line of that page:

http://www.mgcars.org.uk/carclub/index.html

"The energy, enthusiasm and loyalty of members of the various MG Affinity clubs around the country is very much valued by all within MG Rover."

Note use of the word >> various <<. That seems plain enough. Does not make good commercial sense for only 'certain' MG club members to qualify ... good way to miss out on some sales.... which is surely not the point of the exercise.

John.

P.S. I was very tempted to go for a silver ZS which some lucky devil had won in a competition. Unwanted prize! Terrific saving @ 9995 with 125 miles only on the clock. Full spec with all the goodies but decided against it because of the colour. That silver is not sufficiently distinctive and the car looks too much like a R45 in that colour, unlike the more vibrant blues, greens and yellows Zeds.

I think that silver car has now passed into the hands of some dealer as it (or a very similar unwanted car prize - unlikely ) is re-advertised but the price is somewhat more now ....... DOH!

Would you know if anyone rents out MG Zeds either short or long term ?

John,

I think all the privilege schemes are the same from all those offering them. If you want a price list - just drop me a line!

Thanks for the offer Jerry. I already have one.

I was before and certainly am now ... :o) MG-R want to sell cars ... simple as that! None of this you qualify, you don't "them and us" stuff. Too right.

Phoned MG-R Priviliged Sales Thursday (see MMM thread):

... and "Authority to Buy" under this scheme arrived first thing Saturday morning .... The guy there was very helpful, even suggested placing order BEFORE Authority arrived to save on delivery time .....

Not that simple, these discounts generate volumes which would otherwise NOT obtain. More Volume = reduced unit cost which can mean better returns on all the cars sold under all schemes. I've known dealers sell cars for zero profit ON THAT PARTICULAR CAR so that a monthly sales target can be reached qualifying for a better margin to the dealer on ALL sales (correction not sales; registrations) completed that month. That used to be the way it was, and even today may operate in a similar way which explains why so many dealers (not just MG-R ones) have new delivery mileage pre-registered cars at attractive savings. Remember, these schemes are NOT peculiar to MG-R .... most manufacturers operate something on these lines ..... it "shifts the tin" ....

My cousin, disappointed at not being able to replace her Rover Metro with a new one recently, bought a new SAXO instead and "saved" over 1000 quid VAT ...... That's done by building in larger discounts ... you still pay VAT of course but on the reduced figure. Had a suitable Rover product been available for her, I'd got that too under this excellent MG-R discount scheme last year. The offer is for ONE new car per year IIRC. If the price of a car is reduced by 1000 quid, you actually save 1175 quid because you dont pay VAT on the 1000 quid! Then there's FREE FINANCE, ZERO% APR and all the rest that dealers offer .... how CAN they all do it ... Easy, most car prices in the UK are over-priced in the first place ... why else do so many buyers now try to do personal imports.

SORTED >>>>:O))

These deals usually work best to your advantage if you're not part-ex'ing, unless you have something that will shift quickly with little work involved to put it on the forecourt.
Martin.
Martin

Martin,

Yes fair point. Dont expect a maximum discount AND generous part-ex allowance. It can't really work like that.

Last time I did a part-ex deal on a new car was back in the 1970s. Ever since always sold the car privately then obtained best discount on new car. Done correctly that way, it's possible for ordinary Joe Punter to win on both swings and roundabouts. I usually keep my cars for several years, 6-10 or longer even and thus as one private owner from new, a still tidy seven year old car will usually sell itself privately.
