MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Boot lid problems, end in sight

We don't believe it!!!!!
Last week, a call to the MGR customer services was a classic. They have no knowledge of any problem with ZS180 bootlids, and have no record of our constant complaints about this dangerous item. Priceless. However, we had a call from our dealer on Wednesday to say that a new spring kit has been developed and could they have our car to fit it. 5th of December is the day, will let you know how it is.

Interesting as on another website Dr Dave says a there is a simple fix just contact dealer. Should this be contact dealer after the 5th!

Awaiting solution to tame this animal of a bootlid.

Thanks Nik&Anita

"Less acceptable though is the ease at which the boot lid closes on the back of your head when you're removing items from the boot"

A quote from Roger Parker on page 51 of the December issue of Enjoying MG. I can't believe Roger hasn't brought this to Longbridge's attention.

Longbridge 'HAVE' been working on a fix!
I susspect that is what Nik and Anita will be getting?

I find, and I've I have posted this before,
that the car must be parked dead level, boot will then stay up, or park nose of car pointing down a slope! :-)

I have had new springs in mine, but they only lasted a few days before it was shutting on my head again. Looks like the mountings and the springs both need sorting.

MG Rover should look back in the archives! We have been chatting about this on the Metro/Monty/Maestro site. Didn't cut corners then, as some wd have you believe. All you need is stronger (thicker) coiled springs! Simple.

The Montegos with boot spoilers and other Montys with boot spoilers all had stronger (MUCH stronger) springs to allow for the extra weight of the spoiler. Whereas one of you lot will probably be decapitated before the problem (such an elementary problem too) is fixed, I nearly lost my head too, from the bootlid (Monty) but in the opposite direction. I removed the boot spoiler, opened the boot and jeez the power of the stronger springs allowed the spoilerless bootlid to fly up as such speed I only just managed to get my chin out of the way in time!
Intrigued to know what size the boot springs are in Zs. Knowing how tight car manufacturers are they're probably using std Monty ones!!!
John

The springs are uprated on the cars with the big spoiler but obviously not enough, and by looking at the EPC they dont look like a normal spring, more like a bar with the ends bent over, very strange looking.

Please visit new thread for an unbelieveable update on our bootlid.

I have, and it is something that is specific to the big spoiler equipped saloons only. In fairness I have only had the problem on one occasion, however being aware of the problem means that you are more specific in ensuring that you lift the lid fully.
