MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Boot lid, Absolutely stunned

Well, here goes.
Anita dropped the car off at the dealers last night for the 'uprated springs' to be fitted. This appointment was made by the dealer when they informed us that they had the new springs. We went to collect the car this evening, and on arrival were told that they hadn't quite finished yet. So we waited 15 minutes. The car was then parked outside the showroom by the service manager, I (Nik) went out to check what had been done,"Open the boot" I asked. But he didn't, so I did. It opened and fell straight down again. "You Haven't done anything to it" I said, with a few other words added. He replied that they only wanted to look at it to see what springs it needed and that when they have some they will phone us to book it in. Not good enough. I told them to keep the car until it is fixed. We now are unfortunately the drivers of their Rover 25 until that boot is fixed. What else could be done?
very very P****d off.

DOH! ... severe lack of communications there methinks ..

Need cheering up? - read the nearby thread "Monty Boot lid Springs" ... made me laugh! Maybe a solution there for the Zeds too!
John McFeely

Hi Nick & Anita
Yes your not the only ones to report this. Audi build a twin clutch semi-auto gearbox, others are almost here with "Camless" engines and MGR can't sort out a bootlid spring system.

I don't know if i should laugh or cry!
"Oh death where is thy sting!
Mega

P.s You must be pleased with the Blue's progress this year.

This boot lid problem has also occured on some MGF models that have been altered from the original design by MG-R.
MG-R should know about as I wrote and receive a reply nearly a year ago.

This should be covered under healty and safty.

Some one will eventually be seriously injured,it could be yourselve, your partner or children.
Imagine it knocking a child unconsciousor or severing it fingers.

I think now, it should be reported by the people who have this problem to the Ministry of Transport, who then should make this issue a recall that MG-R must fix.
Rob

Can someone explain to me - a new boy to the MGF only had mine six years 9 months -what theis boot lid problem is as I have never heard of it before, mine works perfectly - lid opens, stays open and shuts when I shut it.

Ted,

The MG version of the 45 comes with a bookcase mounted on the boot. I understand the weight of this is too much for the boot springs so when you open the boot you stick your head in, boot thier is a risk that boot and bookcase will shut on your head!.

Short soloution is surely to be careful, long term solution is a larger spring!

So basically this is a problem only with lids that have tea trays etc fixed to them?

Must admit that when I had the boot lid luggage rack on and an old cast iron Singer sewing machine on it then the lid would not stay open:-)

The cars have to be inspected first; then the appropriate mods can be carried out....sounds like a misunderstanding or lack of communication here....

Can't we just send the MGZS variants with the big spoilers to France. They love the old 'Madame Guillotine'

Do you know - I pulled up outside the dealership and sat in my car and waited. And do you know what? Nobody came! Nobody came over to open the door - they just left me sitting there; presumably they expected me to open the door myself. And as for red carpet? Forget it! I just drove off in a huff.
Robert Redford

What the hell did you expect them to do???

Only this would happen in a new Merc Dealership - seen one recently?

Did you toot your horn, btw?
Meglomaniac

MEGA,
The Blues are doing fine. Hope tommorrow is better than midweek.
Were informed today that the boot is now fixed. It will be collected tommorrow and the outcome will be posted.
Nik & Anita

Had my Zed more than 12 months now and never had a prob with boot lid as long as it is opened fully!Spoke to 2 other owners and they say the same.Must be some Goblins at work.(Same ones thast stole the red carpet)Not.
S Forbes

Forbesy,
If we open the bootlid fully, It just falls from a greater height and hurts a bit more.

I understand that
All dealers should know what to do - two visits maybe required - the first being a visual inspection, then order the correct parts.
Obviously does not apply to your dealer, and how many types of uprated springs can there be that it needs a visual inspection?

This boot lid problem is also on my MGF Freestyle,as yet so I am told no part number is available for an uprated spring.

This is dangerous and it should never have left the factory like this.
Joe

We collected our car today and if this is the best that MGR can do with the boot springs it is a poor show. The lid stays up, JUST. We have the impression that the boot hinges have just been tightened to give some friction. We have done enough moaning about this as the car is otherwise very good. So we will just hope that the bootlid does not come loose with use. Signing off this point now but not really happy.
Nik & Anita

Oh yes, I always toot my horn on the forecourt. But the lazy little buggers just stayed in the showroom. I ask you! You just can't get service these days! The customer (that's me) is always right, and should be accomodated to the nth degree even when I'm wrong. Next thing they'll be expecting me to open the bonet once in a while and look at that engine thingy in there. Well, they've had their chance and nw I'm very cross. Oh yes. I am.
Robert Redford

Your right Bobby, you have to open the boot lid,but you don't need to close it.
Its got a special inbuilt feature by MG.

Remember you famous song 'bootlids keep falling on my head' when you were a cowboy.
Rob

I had new springs fitted to mine, lasted about a day before bruised head. Recommend keeping a wooden spoon in the boot (handy prop)
Climber

I can only think I must have a "rogue" car, absolutely no problem with mine!
S Forbes

Robert Redford,
I (Nik) tried to ignore your stupid postings, but people who won't give they're own names when interfering with threads are pathetic cowards. You know my name and where I live. Post again by all means but don't hide from us.
