MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - CD Changers in the ZR

hi guys,

I have just got me a ZR, i am trying to find a place to fit my mStation Mp3 player. i think if i knew where MGR put the CD Changer when fitted as a option i might find it a bit easier to find a place for it. right now i am thinking under the passager seat, i dont want it on the rear seat back as i carry a lot of heavy stuff in the boot and it would get damaged. any ideas would be a huge help.

Thanks
Chris

Dunno about dealer fit location for a ZR but for F/TF it's the boot so I guess it there! There is a wiring route / channel built into the F/TF for it so I'd ask the dealer about the route / location for a ZR.

Anyway, how about in the glovebox? It's a favourite position for an MGF / TF. Fits a treat and very easy to do. Just four screws removes the 'box (watch the light wiring!), drill the mounting holes and a cable hole and it's done. 45mins tops! No drilling or cutting of metalwork (rust), no long cable runs, no exposed autochanger, lockable glovebox etc. Very neat and a passenger can change the CD's easily whilst the car is moving.

thanks for the info Ian, i had thought about the glove box but there is no room behind due to the air bag stuff. oh well thanks anyway, looks like its going under the seat.

rover sell a bracket which fits under the n/s speaker in the boot. It bolts to mountings which are already in place and is a doddle to fit. The part numbers (the 2 bolt together to make 1 bracket) are RXQU100700 + RXQU100710, they cost £8.70 each + vat.
These may seem expensive but they keep the changer out of the way of items rolling about in the boot and look very neat.

Hi,

Beware fitting a CD changer under the seat. The wiring for the seat belt pre-tensioners is around that area and the pre-tensioner works by fing a small pyrotechnic charge. Work out the consequences for yourselves!!!!!

Hi Mark!
We've fitted a few CD Autochangers under the seats on 25/ZR with no ill-effects so far.....

The 'changer is far enough away from any pre-tensioner/sidebag wiring, so I think it's safe enough..

I cheated a bit with my CD Changer. I got the main dealer to put the wire in to the boot for 30 pounds that I supplied. I bought the unit for the Kenwood system off the internet, but instead of buying the standard 99 pound player, I bought the model up which supports CD Text for any extra 25 pounds. The brackets are still an ongoing saga since I ordered them in January and Caterpillar took over. I have not been able to get then. However with a bit of wood and a couple of angle brackets painted black I was able to neatly install to Changer under the speaker on the existing bracket holes. If you do get hold of the CD brackets I would be interested to know. Around preston and Bolton at the moment you can not even get a paint touch up stick form MG. The other thing that may cause some problem is that Caterpillar have changed alot of part numbers thus adding futher confusion. If you are going to attempt to put the wire in yourself, my wire runs behind the passinger side front speaker and along the lenght of the sill. Be careful with the seat pre-tensioner wire. If you disconnect the battery for half an hour before starting you could disconnect and remove the passinger seat to aid routing the cable.

Good luck

Just to add my two pennies worth...

I had a Sony autochanged installed on the floor of the boot running parallel to the sides of the car to the right hand side adjacent to the wheel arch.

The spare wheel location causes some trouble for boot floor location and had I known about the 'official' locating position under the parcel shelf underneath the rear left hand speaker I'd have probably had it put there.

As for spare parts, things (especially around Preston) seem in dire straights...still! Nigel, if you get anywhere let me know. Keep harassing SGL every fortnight or so. I intend to do this from Friday onwards.

thank for all you tips guys, whats this about having to diconnect the battery for 30mins?

the mounting point under the speaker is no good as this mStation is basically a 10GB PC hard disc, and as you may or may not know magnets dont do them much good.

i am going to need to take out the seat so any tips on this front would be welcomed, like what tools am i going want what do i have to disconect/undo.

thanks again everyone.
