MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Cigar Lighter Or Aux Power Socket??

I have a ZS180 which has a blanking plug in the cigar lighter socket. I asked for the actual cigar lighter from the dealership and I've been told that it's for mobile phones chargers only and that if I want a cigar lighter the car needs to be booked in to be upgraded. Apparently the socket itself has to be changed!!! I had a look at the fuse rating (15 amp) and that seems OK for powering a cigar lighter so why is there any need for modification or upgrading? The handbook is unclear on this matter and I can't help feeling the dealership is pulling a fast one here. Also the car spec. states that the cigar lighter and ashtray are illuminated when lights are on. Not so on my car, so maybe this is why the mod is necessary.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please. It sounds utterly nuts to me!

My ZS180 has cigar/ciggarette lighter fitted, which my mobile phone charger pops straight into, so I would assume the socket is the same. If yours is blanked of, maybe it was never actually fitted in the first place?

AFAIK ZSs are fitted with cigar lighters as standard. I'd go back to the dealer and complain.

Cost cutting, per chance?

Along with a TF160 we also have a Freelander,these
are fitted with a cigarette lighter in the front and an auxillary power socket in the rear of the centre console. Both sockets look identical and both will operate the mobile phone charger, the only difference being the rear one has a spring loaded cover. Out of interest I have just tried the cigarette lighter in both sockets, the lighter fits into the auxillary socket but will not lock in when pressed. I then tried the lighter in the front lighter socket and it works fine, so the two sockets in the Freelander are different. Could you borrow a lighter centre to try in your socket if it locks in and works then you could purchase the centre as a spare,if it does not work then I think you could assume that the socket is indeed auxillary only. Hope this helps.
