MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - How to replace a resistor?

My MGZS heater fan now only works on position 3 and 4. I think its the resistor going so how do I replace this?

Have a look in the MGF Technical archives - the unit is bound to be very similar to the one that both the MGF and TF uses. The resistor pack is easy to replace, and new resistors easy to solder in... :o)

I was sent this by someone that did this job on a Rover 416.

My local Rover dealer (back in the days when we had Rover dealers) quoted me £70 for this job saying it was tricky. This isn't true; it's as easy as changing a brake light!

Firstly you'll need to get a 'resistor pack' for your Rover. Buy new as they do fail with age.

This isn't a common fault with Rovers; it happens to all cars such as my wife's Ka and my parent's Fiesta.

Once you have the resistor pack do the following:

1) Remove the passenger glove box; there is a bolt by each hinge. The glove box then lifts out to reveal the main blower enclosure.

2) On the top of the blower enclosure is the resistor pack; it has some wires plugged in to it. Un-plug the wires.

3) Remove the old resistor pack; there are a couple of bolts. Carefully lift it out; the remaining elements are brittle and we don't want them to drop off into the blower.

4) Fit the new resistor pack, re-fit the securing bolts, and plug in the wires.

5) Test the blower to ensure it works at all speeds.

6) Re-fit the glove box.

The whole process takes about 2 minutes (if that).

Excellent instructions
Many thanks for that, works a treat now

I agree it is very easy to change a resistor pack in the Z cars. It is a bit more fiddly in an F as the pack is lower down behind the central binnacle. Another easy job to do on the ZR and ZS is to replace the pollen filter. Just remove the glove box lid (2 bolts) and this reveals a bar which is easily removed or released at one end. Disconnect the wiring if necessary, remove the cover and pull out the filter. Vacuum out the slot as a lot of leaves and other rubbish, as well as pollen and dust, gets stopped by the filter and push in the new filter making sure it is the right way round and right way up (they are marked to show which way is correct). Reassemble in the reverse order, as the saying goes. Does anyone know a source of pollen filters at a reasonable price? I have paid £23.50 incl VAT at my old MGRover dealer and I wonder if they can be found at a cheaper price.

Ebay often has listings for Pollen Filters, usually around £13.

Thanks for the tip about another source of pollen filters, Martin ZT. You are quite right about the price too.
Derek Porter

No problem, Derek, your tip was also very useful for my wife's 214, I must remember that as I service her car myself.
