MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MG Insurance taking the P
Just had a renewal quote from MG Insurance after my first year's free - £1246.35! This for a ZR TD+. Supposed to be a low insurance group. My MGF has the accumulated full NCD, had to start again for the ZR. Gonna have to do some ringing around. Does anyone have any hints on arranging second car insurance. Cheers Andy |

Hi Andy. Is your MG Insurance quote from an insurer that provided free or low cost cover when you bought your MG or is from MGOC Insurance, (often called MG Insurance Services)? The free or low cost insurance providers offer manufacturers a basic deal which they pay for and then give the insurance "free" or for a nominal rate but of course the customer is paying because it's included in the price of the car. Insurers who do this are happy to take a loss in the first year because stats show that 60% - 70% of renewals are taken up by people who don't shop around. Premiums vary depending on your experience and history and on the post code. Try MGOC Insurance/Lancaster. Admiral and NU Direct as they are cheap at present. Tescos is working through Direct Line and offering silly low rates to build up a customer base for the future. Good luck Roche |

Andy, just an idea. How about talking to your insurer of the F and getting that switched to a limited mileage (assuming you're not going walkabout on the continent soon) and having both cars with the same company? |

andy , i can do better than that.im 32 with full no claims bonus & after the free years insurance , i was quoted £1400 on a mg zr 105. i ended up changing it for an mg zs & was quoted £527 with road side assistance from MORE THAN insurance.i tried a fair few companies & theres was the most competitive.on the mg zr they wouldve done it for under £400 |

It is a real bummer that the UK insurance company have not grasped that some people can actually afford 2 or more cars. When we got the second car, we got 1 years free cover and were then offered 1 years NCB. 7 years NCB for joint husband and wife on the F would not effect the the 1 year's NCB on the second car for the same aged couple! THe trouble is no one bothers with the details on the "free" insurance. What we should have done is got the full NCB on the "free" year as the Car saleman only wanted some limited proved (like the renewal on the F!). Going for a large excess drives premiums way down. We have £1k excess on both cars and both are now under £300 per annum which aint bad for London. Cheers Patrick |

Roche, it's the branded MG Rover insurance that came free with the new car, it comes on MG Rover headed paper, but it's exactly the same document format and addresses as I used to get when I was insured with Privilege Insurance. Ditched them too at the time! I'll be shopping around, yep Patrick, it's stupid how badly 2nd car drivers are catered for, stupid thing is, I can only drive one at a time! The F's with Peter Best. I'll give them a call and see what can be done, been plugging away at some online quotes as well already coming down to 700ish. Andy |
