MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MG ZR is best selling small hot-hatch

From 4car.co.uk:

27/11/2002

MG's ZR hot hatch is romping away with the title of best-selling hot hatch supermini in the UK, decisively overtaking that darling of the Max Power set, the Citroen Saxo.

In the first 10 months of this year, MG Rover has sold just over 10,000 examples of its reheated Rover 25, the Saxo managing 6800 units. In third place is Peugeot's 206 GTI, with a score of 6400 sales. The ZR is not the best-selling hot hatch of all, though - that title, ironically, goes to the MINI Cooper, which competes in the class above with the VW Golf GTI and Ford Focus ST.

Cooper versions of the MINI have gone to over 20,200 new owners so far this year, business that would have been Rover's had BMW not disposed of the company, a move which brought about the creation of the ZR in the first place. The Golf, the car that started it all, trails third overall behind the Cooper and the ZR, with just under 9500 sales, composed of the 1.8T and 2.0 litre GTIs, and the V6 4Motion.

Very good news Ann,but MGR cannot live off the UK market alone & there is nothing like the same recognition & good will on the continent (how many ZRs were sold there ?)

Its necessary to do some market research to find which models would be most attractive in the different
countries and promote those.eg in France 65% of sales are diesels so the new 135 HP version should urgently be made available in MG ZTs and ZSs,and the equivalent Rovers.

I would love to sell mine!

Gonna be tooling around in a 2003 model year MG ZR160 next week - will let you know if it's any different to the 2001 model MGR loaned me earlier this year.

Sorry folks,I'd like to sell my ZR160!

Registered October 2001, just coming up to 20k miles, Solar Red.

My wife would like me to keep it, but I preferred the BRM Rover 200, mainly for the interior, and, dare I say it, IMHO, the build was better on the BRM. I haven't had any rattles etc off the ZR, but the paint job has been frankly poor. Black plastic showing through the red and peeling paint on bumpers. And why is it that every 200 / 25 I have owned (three now) the black trim on the door frames, wrinkles just above the handles and has to be replaced?

Don't 'spose I'll sell it now!

Sense says look at a ZTT (if I want to stay in MGR fold!) and want new. But am getting fed up of waiting for the rear wheel drive higher powered versions, that I would love to try and stretch to.

Did come across a very very low mileage Rover Coupe Turbo in minty condition. Not at all as sensible as the ZTT, but great for the drive to and from work, silly low price and 200bhp, decisions, decisions!

ZR best selling hatch???????????? don't think so somehow, these figures are based on the number registered by dealers, look at mgr dealers forecourts to see where these "sold" cars are - all pre-registered but not sold
billy

billy,

You have a point but, whilst this pre-reg v. sales malarky does happen with many car makes, I dont think it applies currently to the ZR sales. ZRs are fast becoming a very common sight on local roads and there are now THREE in my works car park. What I thought was only one Trophy blue ZR is in fact two as they were parked close to each other today. I've only kept an eye on two MG-R dealerships and both did not have a registered ZR available. Several registered ZS and ZTs were available which I guess were demo cars.
