MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MGZ S loss of gears

Hi everyone.

This is mainly for anybody with a ZS.
Just to let you all I have done a few ZS PDI's now and with my third one lost all gears except 2nd which it was stuck in and this was because the gear selector stabilizer bar retaining bolt had fallen out causeing the lose of gears and further checks to the others on PDI were also looser than required, and the first ones were called back by us just to check and two of them were also looser than required,so my advise to you is when you next pass your dearler just pop in and get it checked and torqued it will take 5 mins at the most.

My dealer abrogated this comment, and told me he'd charge me if I brought my ZS in to be checked.

What sort of response have others had from their dealers.

Change dealers - your dealer should be reported to MGR. My local dealer is SUPERB - www.kernahan.co.uk

If you are unhappy change dealers and let MGR know your reasons - this is the only way to sort out shortcomings!

I did this with a Nissan Dealer about 5 years ago, Nissan HQ basicly work a points system, taking points away from Delaer who have had valid complaints against them.

Just to say 5000+ miles on the clock of my ZS and no major probs with gear selection. Only thing is if you are shuffling back and fourth, reverse sometimes complains a little. But I learned to be positive with the selection of reverse so its not a problem!

Try using the handbrake in a forward only motion, it'll save reverse....LOL

Neil, as always your advice is invaluable!! :-)

"reverse sometimes complains a little" So BMC/BLMC/BL/LC/AR/R/MG R *still* make a gearbox where you can't guarantee getting into first and reverse first time every time?
Paul Hunt

Actually Paul in the last week, I've had no complaints from reverse at all. :-)
Perhaps it was me, and not the selector!

Its not just you, I have had problems as well. It does not always go first time and seems to requrie and exact amount of pressure and directional precision. I expect that it comes with practice :0)
Climber

I've never had a problem with the PG1 gearboxes in my Montegos......even at 180,000 miles....

perhaps I should have phrased that a bit better. LOL

Er'indoors says exactly the same!! :-)
Kelvin

Remember, alot of cars still don't have syncromesh on reverse gear!!! that mean it will always crunch at some time unless it is lines up.
If you have to put more pressure into engaging reverse, just take foot off, and re-apply....works every time...as long as your not moving.

The current PG1 gearbox fitted to certain MG ZR & ZS models does indeed have a type of synchro device acting upon reverse gear. 4th gear (IIRC) is partially engaged as reverse gear is selected, thus slowing down and synchronising the gear speeds providing a crash free reverse gear engagement.
