MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Modifying diesels
I clicked on the Peter Burgess advert when browsing through this site the other day. As he does all sorts of jobs with petrol engines, A, B, and O series and so on it struck me that I've never heard of anyone doing head work on diesel engines. Knowing nothing about diesel engines really I wondered if a diesel head would respond to the same kind of work as a petrol. A fast road turbodiesel would be very nice in the real world. |

My knowledge of oil burners is solely based on marine units! With this caveat, I thought oil burners have the fuel injectors firing direct into the cylinder and therefore their is little scope for improving performance at the head. Other thoughts are that their are no diesel racing to allow real experience in this topic by third party tuners and finally perhaps all the performance shops will (rightly?) assume that anyone prepared to drive a diesel must willingly accept all the performance limitations in the desire to save money. Certainly in my days of working on oil burners they used direct injection but that is not the end of it as the injectors are also atomisers breaking the diesel fuel down into a fine mist so that combustion can take place as it hits the highly compressed air which is hot enough to ignite the oil mist. No doubt there have been many improvements since those days and I would be very happy to hear about them. Ted |

Common rail fuel delivery technology and turbo charging are probably the routes to follow rather than head work. Very expensive though. The 75 has a cooler on the return line to cool the excess diesel as it returns to the tank. |

So you guys havn't seen VW's 190 BHP TDi race Golf? |
Eric |
when was it's last race victory ? |
David |
It's so fast, VW had to have to a race series all on its own for the TDi, because even the 2CV kept lapping them! LOL |

Can't say I follow any motorsport of any kind...so I don't know! I know what I'd prefer to drive....ZT190 or a tuned VAG TDi Diesel (180BHP)....no contest mate |
Eric |
Hang on, it's lost 10bhp since your last post! 190 or 180? |
Martin |
<<I know what I'd prefer to drive....ZT190 or a tuned VAG TDi Diesel (180BHP)....no contest mate>> Well, why don't you just bugger off and get one, then? |
Bert |
>> I know what I'd prefer to drive....ZT190 or a tuned VAG TDi Diesel (180BHP)....no contest mate << Eric, quite right. The ZT every time. |
