MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Monte Carlo Rally

Not good news from Monte Carlo :-(
(text from Ch4 site)

The Monte Carlo Rally challenge of Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson came to an end on stage three of the rally - the second competitive stage after the second stage of the day was cancelled - when the car left the road and was unable to continue. After being sixth in class on the opening stage of the testing rally, the GSE Motorsport-developed MG ZR was second quickest on the split times for stage three before being caught out by a patch of gravel at high-speed.

“It was going really well and the car was quick,” explained Gwyndaf. “We were second quickest on the split time up until that point, then the car stepped out violently on some gravel, we were unable to recover, and ended up on our roof in a ditch. The pace of the MG ZR shows that there is so much more to come from this car, and it's a shame we didn't get to prove that right here.”

“It's disappointing for the rally to be over so quickly for Gwyndaf,” said Brian Griffin, Manager, Motorsport, for MG. “The car has real potential and was going well - but this has already proved to be a rally of attrition.”

Stage three was a repeat of the morning's opening stage, a 28.7km climb on narrow mountain roads above Monaco.

The Monte Carlo Rally was the debut event for the new MG ZR rally car, which will be contesting the entire 2002 Junior World Rally Championship, to be held on six major rallies across Europe. Next JWRC event for the car and crew will be the Rallye Catalunya, to be held in Spain, which begins on March 22.

Ho Hum, never mind, at least itr was quick while it lasted (unlike two out of the three Citroens that didn't even make the first stage!) and trying skydiving isn't just confined to Gwyndaf (like the Skoda that was stopped from a severalteen hundred foot drop by a lamppost! Serious pant-changing time, there)
Heres to the Catalunya in March!

I do wonder if they shouldn't be looking at a younger driver, with a recent track record at this level....

I do wonder if they shouldn't enter with two cars ...

GWYNDAF RETIRES FROM MONTE CARLO RALLY

The debut of the MG ZR EX258 rally car driven by Gwyndaf Evans and Chris Patterson came to an end on stage three of the Monte Carlo Rally when the car left the road and was unable to continue. This was during the second ‘competitive’ stage after the second stage of the day was cancelled.

After being sixth in class on the opening stage of the testing rally, the GSE Motorsport-developed MG ZR EX258 was second quickest on the split times for stage three before being caught out by a patch of gravel at high-speed.

Like many other enthusiasts, I was disappointed to learn of the MG's very early crash exit from the Monte Carlo Rally and that it will be March 22nd before the next MG appearance. By that time the BTCC will be about due to start.

One thing I did like this year. Channel 4's improved TV coverage. Better than good by previous TV rally standards. Got the balance just about right IMO. Little attention to the presenters with the main focus were it should always be, on the cars and competition with much excellent footage of the great action. Two hours TV coverage in total over the three days. None of the "look how clever WE are" type of coverage by other channel's presenters as in past years. I for one, greatly appreciated this. Pity the result will depend on the outcome of that penalty and subsequent appeal. The impressive young Frenchman in the Citroen is THE winner in this observer's books irrespective of the final decision which looks a certainty now. Rules is rules ..... :-(

you know.. it's a shame they don't run with the big boys in the WRC class... it would do great advertising for them, and if nothing else it would allow us to watch the MG's rally in North America.. we only get coverage of the WRC rallies.

On a side note, the ZT's had their debut at silverstone today in the toca touring series. They came 5th and 7th overall. the cars had some trouble toward the end of the race with the front driverside wheel stickking on the hub and they lost some time in the pits... they weren't driving very aggressively. I think if they get out there and start getting aggressive they could do really well. Then again, a brand new team, with a brand new car, in the very first race of the season.. sounds like a good start to me!

Dave..
I assume you saw this on TV?
The touring cars are in fact ZS, not ZT!!

yeah.. i saw it on tv... sorry about the mistake.. I meant ZS.....gosh they look sharp!

Gwyndaf Evans has been promise to be good for too long now. I think Gwyndaf offs will be a consistent trend through out the championships. No fault with the car I bet!
