MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - RDS-TMC MESSAGES letter to Jeremy Clarkson

Anyone else with my problem please respond !

Dear J.C

July last year I bought a new MG-ZT 180 + SPORTS AUTO.

I choose the NAVTECH- Satnav (highline) system & Intelligence Pack, amongst many other extras.

After waiting 10weeks for delivery my gleaming new Solar Red motor arrived (WITH ALL THE TOYS).

Once the first day joy subsided it was back to business up & down the congested roads of our great country, Being on the road for approx 45000mls/year.

As advertised the Satnav has the features of :- RDS-TMC.

After playing with the knobs and setting all my wish's on screen ie: accidents/stop-go/stationary/closed etc.
The message system did not work ( WHY )

On contacting my Dealer I was informed that the message system was not available yet due to the split of BMW/ROVER they had not signed the partnership deal.

Q: BUT I WANT IT
A: IT WILL BE AVAILABLE SOON, AS SOON AS THE DEAL IS DONE IT WILL WORK !

( 12 MONTHS LATER ) After numerous fob-off phone calls i contacted another Dealer who strangely had never been asked the question.

Following contact with the Factory he came straight back and confirmed that the deal was still not done* and no idea when this will be sorted.

As you can imagine I was pretty *angry* ! But thanked him for his assistance.

Asking why - if it is not available is it advertised in every MG Rover showroom in the country.

A: Give in !

Please can you help whilst I have paid for the optional extras all I want is a system that will help me get round this the country without sitting in Queue for endless hours.

Mr Clarkson, please expose this incorrect advertising practise to avoid other disappointed customers.

Your the man for the job !

Please respond as soon as possible.

Yours

Settle down, Beavis.

It *does* work. You just need an upgraded disc.

The CD you need to enable reception of TMC codes for the UK is the MCGBITNT03/01 from VDO-Dayton. You can order it online direct from VDO.

what .... can not this upgrade be found on Kazza? and downloaded? Bugger!
Cecil Kimber

Mines been on back order for 4 weeks now.

The TMC disk is around £40 more than the non TMC version. Since the Rover (read BMW) Sat Nav boxes comes with TMC and Rover charge £2.3k for the feature, you would think they could run to an extra £40 for the correct disk.

Penny-pinching, as it is known!

I have a ZT with the same system and also found the TMC does not work in the U.K. with mavtec CD’s. Before Christmas last year I purchased a CD for Denmark as I decided to visit my brother who is currently working out there. TMC works fine though Europe and in Denmark! You need country map for best diversions though as it only covers major road in Europe (that includes your UK CD) otherwise it will send you on a long route around!

tried a brand new BMW Disc no joy

What you need is the VDO Dayton 2003/01 GB/Ireland Disc - part no. MCGBITNT. You can buy this direct from the VDO Web site or the cheapest I found was on Edworth's side. https://www.edworthys.co.uk/framesets/sproducts_start_navigation_and_multimedia.html

Costs £144 instead of £150 with VDO....

I have always used these guys for map discs (last 4 years!) and they have always been good. Normally they deliver within 24 hours. This time I had to wait 5 weeks- not sure why but at least they did not bill the credit card until they had the item!

I digres - load this into you Sat Nav and tune the radio to Classic FM and the TMC letters in the bottom of your screen will turn green - you have TMC data flowing! Only used it on a single journey so far and that was London to Peterborough. I got a message while on the M25 about a traffic jam in Peterborough!

You also get Post Code input. Instead of entering the town you enter the post code and then choice from a limited range of streets in the post cosde. Fanastic - no more wondering what town the system things some addresses are in and wonderful for London!

You can also search on just a street name and get all the streets on the disk with than name!

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Patrick

PS I understand Classic FM is the only UK station carrying TMC. You can listen to tapes or CDs so long as the radio is tuned to Classic. Swap to Radio 4 or something else and the only TMC letters turn black!
