MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - Super Unleaded/Shell Optimax

does my ZR benefit from these fuels, and/or do I need an adjustment, or a knock sensor fitted(standard garage job or specialist)?

All knowledge gratefully digested :)

I don't believe your engine has a knock sensor, but after a few tankfuls, you should get some benefit. It won't give you extra horsepower, for that you either need a knock sensor (not sure if that is retro-fitable?), or to readjust the timing (chip change?) If the latter, it will limit you to purely super u/l. However, on current setup there will be an improvement (not cost justifiable tbh) in the consumption, and an improvement in emissions. Overall, depending on how long you plan to keep the car, then over a several years your system will stay in top shape, whereas on cheaper fuels, the performance will decay with time as deposits build up in the fueling system.
Apparently Shell Vmax is available in parts of Europe with 100 Octane as opposed to the Optimax 98 or the other super u/l's at 97.
I have run my ZT since day one, bar a couple of times wheni t had a super u/l from elsewhere, and I do notice a difference in response. MY 1980 GT was run on the stuff at 120k for 1000 miles and apart from no pinking with the timing set as per 4star, the carbs/head were spotless when I stripped the engine to rebuild it.
There is a forum on the Shell site for Optimax.

The is no knock sensor on any K series but even if there was the actual ignition settings will be set to run on 95RON fuel anyway. Latest MEMS 3 has more scope for alteration than previous MEMS 1.6, 1.9 and 2J. so full use could be made of a higher octane fuel.

Roger, does that include the KV6?

My Honda CTR has a knock sensor and just "Loves" Opti! But hates supermarket "Fag Fuel" brews.

Well, getting a 4p fuel voucher at Sainsburys is just the right excuse to try Super Unleaded. The engine does run smoother, and there is greater will to spin at higher revs using 1st and 2nd gears. This is with no adjustment to the 1.4. If I had any gizmo fitted I would rather it was automatic or switchable in some way.
