Getting to the detail point of the question

The Getrag 5 speed fitted to 75/ZT has a cable change. Internal ratios are all the same whatever current petrol model uses it.

The ratios are...

1st 3.577 to 1
2nd 2.022 to 1
3rd 1.348 to 1
4th 1.029 to 1
5th 0.809 to 1

Final drive ratios vary from application to application but the ZT160 uses a 3.944 ratio, common to the 2.5 75, whilst the ZT190 uses a 4.412 ratio to amplify that models engine spec which is intended to run at higher revs.

Of interest there is also a 3.737 ratio for the diesel which has higher 3rd, 4th and 5th gearbox ratios of 1.292, 0.919, and 0.686.

Not yet seen Autocar, but saw the car over a week ago. Note that the use of silver as a base colour rather than white, is a route also being followed by Renault who have several Laguna V6's in the same clothes otu and about.

I thought Sturmey Archer did gearboxes!!they did on my Raleigh Chopper!.

Thoughts...did not early Maxis have cable chnge? it was one of the worse gearboxes to grace a BL?Rover?whatever car.....i just hope these cables are better than the Maxi's!!!!
Cecil Kimber

Going back a bit in time there Kimber (Abingdon) aren't you? ... :o) Sure there were problems with those first Maxi cables for some owners but it was well sorted on the later cars I drove. With a name like yours I know you cant possibly be one of those with the mindset "Brits never get it right!". As far as I remember, that whole Maxi concept set the ball rolling for a host of copycat clones on that medium hatch theme .... the VW Golf certainly comes to mind.

Kevin,

<< I thought Sturmey Archer did gearboxes! >> They did indeed. My push bike back in the 50s had a 4 speed Sturmey Archer plus a 4 cog derailieur (sp?) effectively giving 16 ratios (flash git!). Not bad considering your average Ford car only had three forward ratios. Probably explains why my old bike used to keep up with some of those old bangers .... :o)... even got stopped by a cop for going too fast one time - good ol' days!
John McFeely

I make the cable point because the change in standard form doesn't display that it is cable operated. It makes a comparison with another current cable change on the MGF which is less precise.

John….me going back in time?…the rumours of my death are just that, rumours!!
I am not a knocker of BL/Rover products….. I have had too many of them to qualify for that award!
I agree with you the Maxi was fine in concept but that early gearbox was never the best around, was it?
I appreciate that engineering has moved on a long way since the late 60’s.
CK...again!
