MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - wrong colour on v5c

when my mgzt160 was first registered from new in 2003 the colour given on the v5c was wrong (GREY) when the actual colour is (anthracite black), , I bought the car new but did not notice this discrepancy until a couple of years ago, when I contacted dvla to change it they refused stating they require written conformation of the original colour off the smmt (make and model codes) but where would I get this now the old mg/rover has gone and the garage I bought from no longer trades? Tried contacting the new mg lot by e-mail and phone but gets no answer, where will the old records be? I have heard the colour is in the code on the vin number? please help thanks

The original paint colour code is usually stated on the VIN/chassis number plate.

This http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/content--name-MG-Rover-200-25-MG-ZR-Vehicle-Information is for the ZR/200, but you get the idea, Anthracite is LQW.

thanks paul thats a great help! now all i need is conformation from mg old records as to colour when delivered to dealer

The point is that the VIN plate is the true record, documentation can be in error, and the DVLA are as likely to get that wrong as anyone else. If the VIN plate shows the actual colour of the car then that is all you need. They may accept a photo, or you may have to take it to a DVLA testing station.

Incidentally it will only be the generic colour that will appear on the V5, i.e. 'Black', and not the manufacturers name for it.

Apparently the MGCC have all the build data - http://www.mgcc.co.uk/zedregister/2012/09/12/mg-car-club-zrzszt-register-acquires-build-data/ - although only available to MGCC members, and little more than appears on the VIN plate. It seems to me this should have gone to BMIHT to be with the build data for 'classic' MGs. It might be worth enquiring whether MG Motor retained a copy and would supply info to you, or did send a copy to BMIHT.

BTW, it may well be that the official DVLA description of 'Anthracite Black' is in fact 'Grey', if visually the colour is something less than fully black.

Thanks for all your help Paul, the colour of the car looks to the "layman" BLACK but has small speckles of silver/grey when looking up close, in sunlight can give a purple hue. unusual, anyway to the police it would be black. been in touch with DVLA and they have said send some photos of car and VIN Plate to them with V5C and they will change the colour result! hopefully thanks again paul will let you know if it all pans out! BAZ.

I wonder what that fashion for dual-hue cars like TVR ended up as, seeing as they could change from lime-green to purple!
