MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - ZT 260 Gremlin tech question

I got back from Sweden at 11 on Friday night knackered but looking forward to a nice cruise home. So I went to the car in the car park at Stansted chucked my backs in the boot and then tried to start it!

NOTHING
...battery wrong?
Naaa tons of power in it!

turn the key and nothing
again
and again!

Try to get through to the MG assistance line and nobody answers the phone! which turns out to be a misconnection between the MG Assistance line and AA...Brilliant!

SO I phone Green Flag using Janet's cover: they send a bloke out who is on site in 20 mins.
He does all the things I tried again...still no joy.
Not even so much as a click although there had been one the first time.

Then he ties a strap to the front drags me down the road and I bump start the car!
whooosh starts very easily, so I drive home.
And since then it starts first time every time..
???

This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening on a ZT260. Have you tried Jerry's X-Power Forum where there are a few more owners with similar issues?

Adrian

Sounds very similar to the problem I had on my ZS180. This was caused by a loose connection on the solenoid. Sometimes the car would start first time, other times it took 2 or three attempts. The problem was solved after I stopped to get petrol and the car wouldn't restart. I called the AA out under the MG assistance (this was the third time for this problem!)and 20 minutes later I was on my way after the wire had been tightened up. I've not had any problems starting since.

Sounds very much like an electrical problem, possible ignition switch or battery earth lead or about ten gazzilion things in the electronics.

This problem hasn't been discussed on the xpower forum as far as I know - mainly the problems in starting are fuel delivery - the engine will turn over fine.

Also, you are not supposed to bump start any car that has cats/uses fuel injection. It can bugger up the cats.

Can you let us know what the dealer finds?

Tony.

Tony Crossley

Will do guys, thanks for the help

re the bump start the engine started sio quickly I dont think it will do any harm its when unburned fuel goes all over the cat that you get probs

Cheers

Neil

would anybody else like to speculate?

Rog Parker?

ALSO Rog would do I get to see the production line?

XPower Forums have a visit in March (and one tomorrow) where you may glimpse a 260 being built.

In fact they are visiting Sport and Racing and will see the V8 race cars! :)
