MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - ZT V8 coming soon

This from 4car:

13/1/2003

MG Rover's rear-while-drive 75-based ZT V8 will apparently go on sale in late spring/early summer this year. Launch of the car has been delayed on several occasions - it was last supposed to have been launched in autumn 2002 - but insiders reveal that the car will now go on into production this spring.

An MG Rover spokesman claims that the car has been delayed by more pressing priorities, not the least being the development of a diesel version of the ZT, and the turbocharged 1.8 K-series engines. Both these power units make the ZT a more attractive prospective for the company car driver with their significantly lower CO2 emissions; the V6 models are poor in this respect.

Partly developed by engineering specialists Prodrive, which co-engineered the car's rear-wheel-drive chassis - the standard ZT is front-drive - the ZT V8 is powered by two versions of Ford's Mustang V8, one with 260bhp, and another with 360bhp, both driving through a six-speed gearbox. The ZT XPower V8, to give its full name, is a low-volume production model that is not expected to be a big seller so much as an aggressively sporting machine intended to boost MG's 'driver's car' credentials. Likely to cost around £30,000, the 360bhp version is claimed to have a sub-five second 0-60mph time and a top speed of 175mph.

Meanwhile, MG Rover is hoping to have its new Tata-based supermini (Rover 15) on sale in time for the September numberplate change, although this is not a certainty. The company is to rework the Indica's interior to upgrade its quality, and restyle the nose and tail to make it more Rover-like. It will also have to engineer airbags for the car. The Indica's existing 1.4-litre 75bhp engine will be used, although in the longer term this engine may be replaced by Rover's K series engine, both for the Rover 15 and the Indica. The Rover version of the car will be made in India.

The new medium car will debut at the Geneva Motor Show in February 2004, probably as a five-door hatchback. A three-door version will follow, and after that a production version of the TCV cross-over concept vehicle. There will MG versions of both the three- and five-door models, if not the TCV too.

Interesting that 360Bhp has been mentioned again, not 385bhp???

Also noticed MG's own website now says 360PS in all locations... So I guess thats the production ready figure?

I wish they'd get a move on, put us all out of our misery!

Ann,
Is that £30K for the 360 HP car?
How much for the other version?

There seems to be a lot of confusion between PS and BHP. Companies like MG Rover use PS because the figures are higher. If memory serves me right (which it seldom does) BHP is about 98.5% of PS. The ZS180 is 180PS, which is approximately 177BHP.

I've seen Rover themselves refer the ZS180 as having 180BHP, so they've been caught out by their own marketing ploy.

Splitting hairs aren't we Ralph?

Seems to be similar HP on the 180 , but 360 or 385 is a larger difference!?
If its £30K for the more powerful version, that's excellent value for money!
