MG MGA - 1959 MGA 1600 on fleabay

Good evening to you all.

Just popped over from the TD board as I'd noticed this one on eBay at: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1959-MGA-1600-Roadster-/300862756232?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item460cd15588

It's got a price tag of £33k but that comes with a claim that it's had £78.8k spent on its restoration. I know our cars can be money-pits but this one seems to take the biscuit.

Having said that, it sure looks pretty.

Regards,

why does it have 1600 rear lights, but all the bulkhead is 1500 (flasher relay, MC cover )

And where is the sparewheel clamp for that money...

Yes, you would have thought for that sort of money Classic Restorations would have bought a Clausager for reference to get the detail right. Always great fun spotting the errors: position of vacuum flame bulb (that's where I have mine for ease of fixing); colour of boot and bonnet stays.

I wonder if the owner died of shock at getting the bill and that's why he didn't drive it. I think you'd have no problem getting up to £78k if you factored in labour costs of £30 an hour on top of the parts.

But I've often wondered why, surprisingly, there seem to be many classic cars put up for sale very soon after completion of a restoration. It can't be to realize a profit because, as we all know, there isn't one. Is it because the owner gets fed up to the back teeth with it after all those countless hours? Or is it because he likes the process of restoration more than the use of the car when it's finished.

Or is it, and this is the one that worries me now I'm coming to the end of my restoration, that he is reluctant to brave the roads for fear of putting a dent in his beloved car? .............Mike

Mike,

Your last sentence is a probable cause. My backdoor neighbor restored a TF, drove it about three times, then sold it because he was afraid it would get damaged while he was out driving it. Sucked...I wish I could have afforded it.
