MG MGA - 982 FTJ

Hi all I'm new here and this is a bit of a longshot...

I have a lovely black and white picture from 1960 of my granddad looking extremely proud to be stood next to his gleaming black police MGA. He was a sergeant in Rossendale, Lancs and later went on to be a police driving instructor now.

I was just curious to know if it was still about. According to DVLA it's now grey and unlicensed, but I think it was licensed when I looked about a year ago.

If anybody knows it's whereabouts I'd love trade pics of it then and now.

Thanks if anyone can help.

Helen

982FTJ - chassis number 55655 - Black/red/red hood.
August or September 1958 production.
Recorded as delivered to Lancashire police district.
If you have more pictures I would be happy to post them here:

Any other information about MGA police cars also welcome.

Thanks Barney that's a really cool page. Good to see it listed there. I'll send a pic later when I'm back home.

In the meantime if anybody knows f its still around I'd be really grateful.

That's 55 cars after mine which was built on 27 and 28 August 1958 as a left hooker for the USA market.

According to DVLA, the date of liability - when it was last taxed/licensed - is 01/04/1985

It looks like it's either been scrapped, or in long-term hibernation.

Gosh 28 years ago! I guess it's a gonner. Shame.
Thanks for that Dave.

Hi Helen,

If you post your photo here, Barney can add it to his web site:

http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/variants/vt110-lan.htm

MGCC as a single 1985 owners name recorded, if you contact me offline, I will put you in touch with the registrar.

Thanks

Hi Helen,

I do own such a police car and I have a little register. Would you be so kind and forward me also the picture while you are sending it to Barney?

Thanks

The build date of that car is 09/09/1958.

This is my request to DVLA in 2012.

There is a twin of this car in a museum in the Lake District and on its window is a photo of several others but not yours. Here is a photo of the photo.

Paul,

my car is just the next on the right, not visible in this shot !
If you look at my picture you could see 330NTJ on the left side. It's the same parade !

Thanks for all of your kind replies. It's been so nice to look at all of the wonderful pictures of these police MGA's.

I haven't been on for a while, but here is the photo of my granddad with his.

Feel free to use it on other sites as long as you credit where appropriate.

Okay. New web page for this car is here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/variants/vt110-lan-982ftj.htm

Helen, What a wonderful picture to have in archives. I can imagine the force had no trouble recruiting with cars like that provided! Grandad looks smart as well!

Great photo Helen. Love the old Police MGA photos , partly because mine is black and is often mistaken for an ex-police car. If you would like a photo taken alongside mine, to replicate your grandfather's pose sometime when the weather improves, let me know and I will bring mine over ( I am not far away in Ormskirk) - cheers Cam
Cam Cunningham

Barney that's brilliant! Just one slight typo - please could you change 'his grandfather' to 'her grandfather'. Thankyou xx

Thanks for the offer Cam. It's very kind of you, but I'm a little camera shy lol.

Done. Happy to change from the proper Queen's English to be politically correct. My postal delivery person similarly didn't like being referred to as "postman".

Barney thank you so much I really appreciate that.

Now this is where I become a real pain the ass. I should have mentioned that he was my grandfather on my mother's side and so he was Sergeant Ellison, not Sgt. Heaton.

Thanks again everyone!

Hello Barney:

You have a mistype on the card !

It should be "HDA", not HAD.

Got it, and fixed. Thanks.

Gordon, Thanks, that youtube was interesting - but ruined by the video operator! Swooshing around, never settling on the subject!
Some folk should never be allowed to handle a camera!

I cannot imagine a modern-day police force using a sports car!
