MG MGA - A and B front coil springs

I'm converting my front suspension to '65 B parts ('59 A). I have learned that the A springs are no longer available (from Moss). I still have the old A springs. Will the B springs work? I've noticed there is a "spring spigot" (spring top locator?) for the B suspension. If the B springs will work, will that locator be required also?

Many thanks!

Jack,

A and B springs differ both in height and pressure (lb rating). B tend to be stiffer and higher, though early B and A twin-cam are comparable (I think). So for a normal A it may well affect your handling.

There is more to life than Moss, so I'd try Little British Car Co or Scarborough Fair on your side of the pond.

Alternatively you could try Brown and Gammon or SC Parts in the UK (amongst a plethora of others).

All the best,

Grant :-)

I have attached some spring data that I have recorded.
It was not prepared by me but I believe that it is reliable.

Alright! Thanks, Mick! According to your chart, there's not enough difference to matter between various A springs. And the B springs actually have a lower load rating.

Moss does carry Deluxe and Twin Cam springs, which, again, are not enough different from the other models to make a difference.

I know Moss is not the only game in town but I usually start there due to ease of navigation. LBCC's website is not user friendly and SF's website is under construction (basically--non-existent).

But back to the second part of my question--do you think the "spring pivot" will be needed in my application? (I'll be using the B shocks, A-arms, pans, swivel pins, etc). $20.00 a piece seems a bit much for these parts.

Thanks, all!

Jack,

There should already be a spring spigot fitted to the MGA, part number AHH5897

It would be nice if Scarborough Faire's website worked, but they have a good catalogue and a phone call to them always yields some good information. The twin cam replacement springs that moss carries are the same springs they offer for the MGB, which are not the same as the original MGA springs. The wire diameter is thicker, and they will make the nose of the car sit too high. Other have posted about that before. I just installed a set of Twin Cam spec springs from SF and they make the car sit perfectly. In my opinion it's worth a few extra dollars.
