MG MGA - Air hose

I've decided it's time to replace a damaged air hose (the big 4" one from the radiator mounting to the heater unit) so I had a quick look at a couple of online suppliers only to find that there are 2 hoses of that size. The one I need is the big 31" one, but should I have the other one as well? And if so, where does it go??

The long trunking goes from the heater to the hole on the dynamo side of the radiator. two shorter lengths go from the the other side of the holes (one either side of the radiator) to the front grill.

Thanks Steve, that explains it. There's no sign of any fixing points on the shelf between the grille and the radiator, but I guess I can just drill new holes and use a couple of large U-clips to secure them?

You want to be sure that you get the correct corrugated laminated aluminium hose that is covered with black paper, otherwise it will not fit in the space between the flange at the radiator and the shroud.

Leacy had it in stock when I needed one for a friend here, and shipping was free, and the price was lower than Moss too.

There is a metal strap that fits round each forward pipe and attached to the shelf by a bolt. You should find the holes about 5" back from the front of the shelf almost in line with the chassis extension struts.

See photos.

And you'll need four foot long arms with two elbows to get the screws in the holes.

That was a job I hope to not have to repeat any time soon.

I drilled more holes inboard from the hoses, making that job much easier.

Robert, if you are having to fit the 4" circular metal loops that secure the front of the hoses on the radiator duct, I would advise you to take the grille off. It will make the job so much easier.

I recently fitted twin electric radiator fans and it was just so difficult to work on them. I have always been really wary of removing the front grille but in the end it proved to be a simple job. I used a 1/4" drive socket set with some long extensions and it took only a few minutes to remove it.( I noticed that on my car the upper central fixing bolt had never been re-fitted which does make the job much easier.)
I used some sticky tape to hold the grille-piping in place when I replaced the grille although some people superglue it to the grille before re-fitting it.

Sometimes I seem to struggle to do things on my cars that seem like they should be easy. I'm so pleased to read that I'm not on my own with this one!
