MG MGA - Aluminium Side Screens

In the external top and side channels of my side screens there appears to be the remains of a thin plywood lining...

See pic

Is this normal - or is it a DIY job by the last owner..?

There should be a thin felt in the groove to stop the perspex screens rattling. Never seen plywood before and I have restored a few pairs.

I have a pair of odd frames if anyone is looking, one s a Weathershield type to go with a VDP hard top, the other is an unknown. Both are frames only, no panes or mounting hardware.

Is it plywood or perhaps the steel and fabric channel that was used in the sliding window Mini?

Kind of looks like cork in the picture. Any chance it could be slightly petrified (original) felt?
Barney Gaylord

It's definitively plywood - I spent last night cutting it out.

I 'think' someone pushed thin plywood into the external groove and glued it in perhaps to make up the diff between the sidescreen and hood/hardtop.

Not an option that I would suggest, but if the fancy takes you....

Dominic, I have a set of Weathershields that I am about to put back together. The frames have been professionally polished to a mirror finish and I have new felt, perspex, rubber, and mounting hardware etc. from Todd Clarke. Do you have any tips you can share on reassembly?

What do you use to glue the felt in place? What is the best way to put in the new perspex windows?

Any advice you can provide would be much appreciated.

I too used Todds parts on my last refresh, and found that no glue was necessary when installing the felt - it's a oversight fit with the frame and sliders.

For the sliders I left them in the sun for an hour before fitting, just to make them a bit more flexible. There's plenty enough flex to install them in the frames. Just install them in the middle and slide them into position.
