MG MGA - Anti-sway bar installed

I purchased an aftermarket anti-sway bar for my car last September. After rebuilding the front suspension over the winter, I finally got around to installing the bar last weekend.

My first impression...WOW, what difference in the corners! It was quite windy here yesterday afternoon. The car was noticably more sure footed at highyway speed, especially driving with a cross wind. The anti-sway bar is one of those, "Why did I wait so long?" kind of improvements.

I thought of doing this myself. Was it straight forward or was there any modifications to the front end to make it fit,
Thanks

Very straight forward installation Kris. You have to drill a 3/8" hole in the forward facing A-arm on each side, and two 3/8" holes on the front frame extension on each side. The supplied mouting brackets are attached through these holes. The full weight of the car needs tobe on the suspension before tightening everything up. I had the front wheels up on a pair of rhino ramps. Worked like a charm with plenty of room to work underneath the front end. Others have suggested installation is a half hour job. I think that's overly optimistic, especially if you haven't done this before. It took me about 1.5 hours total, but then I tend to be slow and methodical when working on my car. In any event, it wasn't at all difficult. As always, Barney's got some good information on is site.

Andy - better to use the MGB front A arms for this conversion. They have a reinforced hole for the sway bar link. Just mounting the link in a stock unreinforced A arm can result in it moving and 'working' a bit.

They only cost $20 a side brand new from Moss.

Bill, the reinforced A-arms are NOT required with the ADDCO anti-sway bar. The links for this bar do not mount directly into the A-arms. There's a quite heavy duty right angle steel mount that bolts to the A-arm. The links then attach to these right angle mounts.

Andy Bounsall

Ah - you hadn't said you'd used an Addco bar.
Bill Spohn

Andy,
I am in Ottawa as well. Where did you purchase your ADDCO sway bar? Is there a specfic size (diameter)?

Hi Ian,

I ordered the bar from Summit Racing (part# aco-111). They ship for free in the US, so I had them send it to an Ogdensburg, NY address then drove down there to pick it up.

Interesting to meet a another Ottawan here on this BBS. Are you familiar with the Ottawa MG Club? Short notice, but next club meeting is Thurs May 15th, 7:30 pm at the Ashton Pub (Ashton). Come on out if your interested or curious. It's a great bunch and visitors are always welcome!

Andy,

Thanks for the info. I joined the OMGC 3 years ago...attended 1 meeting at the "Swan on the Rideau"...then was to busy with life. That being said I will try to get to one of the next meetings and pay my dues....as long as Soccer for the kids doesn't intervene.

Thanks again...

I used a piece of 3/4 angle about 4 " long on were you bolt to the top side of the frame exstension. The light guage metal that you must drill threw is to suseptable to cracking and failure from the bracket they give you. I used the angle as a washer on the top side.
