MG MGA - AUSTRALIAN NATMEET - ADELAIDE 2017
After joining the Aussies at their National Meeting in Perth, Western Australia over Easter this year, and enjoying a truly superb gathering of over 250 MGs and their owners, I will be registering for the 2017 NATMEET in Adelaide over Easter 2017. Inspired by the 20 Aussies who shipped their MGAs to the UK for the MGA 60 anniversary LE-JoG in Sept.2015, I am looking at shipping my MGA to Adelaide and drive the Great Ocean Road after the Natmeet, and spend about 3 weeks in Australia's world famous wine regions! Are any of you on this forum interested to join? Following the guidelines for a temporary import of a motor car to Aus. I must say the online application has its challenges, for example they dictate that a car's VIN should have 17 characters; my MGA is HDR13/49920, which I believe is normal. I wonder if anyone has previous experience of this exercise and can offer advice? Cheers, Doug ![]() |

Doug, It appears that the simplest way of temporary importation is with a CPD Carnet issued by the Motoring Association in your country. http://www.aaa.asn.au/international-services/importing-your-vehicle-with-a-carnet/ https://www.border.gov.au/Factsheets/Documents/whatisacpdcarnet.pdf Have you gone down this route rather than a full vehicle importation? I assume that you will be leaving with the car when the time to leave arrives? |
I B Morris |
Thanks IB, Yes, my plan is to ship the car back to the UK after the tour. My understanding with the Carnet option is that a rather large deposit is required, up to 50% of the value of the car. I am trying to apply using the VEHICLES MANUFACTURED BEFORE 1989 OPTION, the challenge with the online application is that to move on to the next page every field is required, which is in some instances almost impossible. Cheers, Doug |

Doug, looks like you may have to "fudge" the number to get to 17 digits. Some info here .... https://infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/vins.aspx |

Doug, if you tour the wine regions in South Oz the danger is you may not want to go back home. I will look out for you in Adelaide. Don TF 4887 "Figaro' TC 1736 "Sibelius' |

Doug, Bring your Golf Sticks---You will drive along the Longest-God-Damned Golf Course, in the world---"The Nullabor Plane". All of the way between Adelaide and Perth. You will receive a certificate at the end, to say that "You Have Done It!". A Fab. experience. Then be sure to make the time to come up to the Gold Coast-Queensland A must---You will realy enjoy Aussie MG fellowship. |

Hi Doug...remember you well from 2015. Re shipping, contact the organisers of the Peking to Paris Rally to get the name of the firm that ships their rally cars around the World ...it is a UK based Company, and will take all the hassles out of form filling etc. I've heard of several people who use their services, and are highly recommended. |

Doug...The Endurance Rally Association. |

Don, you're not wrong, I live mostly in Bali and wine prices in Indonesia are astronomical! Thanks Ian, we shall try to make it to Queensland, would be great.. Gary, remember you well too from LE-JoG with your lovely blue MGA. That is an excellent pointer, I checked the website of the Endurance Rally Association and have written to them asking advice. Will you join in Adelaide next Easter? Doug |
Doug Wallace |
Doug, there are few big hills between Adelaide and Melb so you had better bring Derek to give you a push. (Yani can follow in the support car). The VIN (vehicle identification number) was something that came in the 70s - they understand 60 year old cars don't have this number (atleast they did when we reimported our cars!) Suggest you contact Cassie Freight here in Oz to see what they recommend. Do make sure your car is spotless clean underneath or you will be up for a special cleaning fee of $3-400! Mike |

Pity that I'm in Adelaide and Melbourne in a few days time rather than in 2017! |

Mike, thanks for your ideas, I hope you are not suggesting that South Australia has hills that can beat our Scottish mountains which you and I conquered on LE-JoG? Anyway, Derek and Yani can both join me in the MGA: when we needed an inspection from the DVLA {British "Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority"}, they cocked up the Logbook, writing in that the MGA was a 4-door saloon! Thanks, already been talking with Cassie Freight, they don't get involved with the import permit itself. Dominic, I spent a long time on your site and read most of your posts, very educational, thanks. But why don't you make a special trip to join our Aussie friends at their Natmeet, Perth this year was awesome! Still working on the details of bringing the MGA Mike, carnet de passage sounds the way to go... Doug |

It is a very long way, and I am only going that far this holiday because I got a stupendous deal for a business class flight from Zurich to Adelaide - €500 plus taxes! As soon as I had the holiday absence approved it was booked, the rest of the planning followed. |
Dominic Clancy |
Dominic, yes a phenomenal deal, on Business class, well done, enjoy! Stop over in Bali, be my guest in our hotel! Doug |
Doug Wallace |
Doug Will be very happy todo just that,Bali was on the radar before this deal popped up Dominic |
Dominic Clancy |
Dominic, Would be a pleasure to meet you, be our guest, just let me know when you plan to visit Bali, my email is douglas AT rad DOT net DOT id Doug ![]() |

I wish I was going to Bali. You would have me calling round too! Bruce. |

Doug I hope getting the bottle of Ardbeg in is easier than getting the car in! Paul |

Update on importing an MGA to Australia on a temporary basis for the 2017 Australian MG NATMEET and touring in Oz: {I did not hear a clamour of interest from this forum to join this great event!} The Aussies led with great intrepidness bringing 20 MGAs to join MGA 60 LEJoG 2015. Thanks IB Morris Queensland, the CPD {Carnet de Passages en Douane} is definitely the way to go, NOT going down the "Vehicles manufactured before 1989" option. Thanks Gary, Queensland, the ERA - Endurance Rally Association - cannot help directly but put me in contact with CARS EUROPE {Classic Automotive Relocation Services}, who know what they are doing, they do the shipping of the cars for the ERA. The deposit required is not so horrific as I had previously been advised. Bruce, welcome in Bali any time, but NOT with your MGA, impossible to bring to Indonesia.. Paul, the Ardbeg can travel with the MGA in the container! Doug |

Hi Doug If my car is up and running I will try and join you for a drive along the Great Ocean Road so you are not doing it alone! Let me know if you require any assistance in Adelaide. I'll bring a tool box. Dave Anderson |
D.J.H Anderson |
Dave, Good news, would love if you can join for the Great Ocean Road drive, maybe some of the Victorians will also be heading home that way. Is your MGA up and running? Working on getting the MGA to Oz, a company called CARS UK is helping, will let you know if I need help in Adelaide. Cheers, Doug |
Doug Wallace |
Doug, with regard to the shipping, maybe contact some of the other MGA group in the UK to get another couple of cars for the container...certainly helps with sharing costs! |
Gary Lock |
I did the great ocean road yesterday and it is a great road with wonderful scenery. |

In an MGA Dominic? |
Doug Wallace |
Doug It should be running by then. Had all the chrome redone in Jakarta, so all of that should be back in Adelaide by the new year ready for installation. Haven't really driven the car much so will need to get her out to see if all is good for a trip of that distance. Dave |
D.J.H Anderson |
Hi Dave, you say you got your chrome work done in Jakarta, was that cheaper than Aus and where did you get it done. Perth prices are very high. Thanks Frank |
F Watson |
Yes I have just had most of the chrome redone in Jakarta, and some in Bali. Had the lot in Bali redone in Jakarta as it was going to peel off in a few years I think. I've been living here for 20 plus years so I don't know how much it costs in Aus and what you get for the price. But I am sure Jakarta is cheaper. Do you ever get up to Jakarta? Dave |
D.J.H Anderson |
Thank you Dave. I don't get up there but it might be worth posting up and back as they want A$450 for the grille frame alone. Thanks for the information. Go Well Frank |
