MG MGA - Auto restrictions in city centers?

Hello All, I am taking my 1958 MGA to Europe for a driving tour in June this year. I have run into some conflicting information regarding driving the car into city centers, for example in Milan. At this point I am not even sure if I can drive to my hotel to unload our luggage. If anyone has experience or information on the designation for the MGA (such as petrol Euro 0) or if there is an allowance for historical cars, etc. I would appreciate some feedback on this. I want to park the car for three days in Milan to travel by train and also would appreciate any notes on secure covered parking in Milan or how to find that? Thanks for any help on this.

Firstly Stephen, congratulations for taking your MGA out of the USA for an adventure...not many do it!
Secondly, from our touring experiences, most hotels will have under cover parking, and you can negotiate for additional days with them (at a cost of course).

Stephen,
we drove a couple of MGAs to the centre of Dusseldorf in Germany last summer to catch the Motorail train.

Dusseldorf has a very strict policy regarding cars and air pollution and and we were similarly worried about being allowed to drive our MGAs into the city.

Fortunately, they had exception policy for cars visiting from other countries and we were allowed to drive our cars into the centre without any penalty.

So if you contact the hotel you are staying at, or the local tourist information centre, I am sure they will let you know what the local rules are.

You should search for Zona Traffico Limitato or ZTL to determine the car restrictions for Milan. Try the following website https://www.autoeurope.com/italy-ztl-zones/

As we have done for some years, my wife and I will be driving our MGA to Italy again this year, out in May and back in June. As a general principle, we always book a hotel with its own parking when touring with the MGA. (This year, due to a clash of business and pleasure activities we must leave the MGA in a hotel garage in Italy for twelve days to make a side trip to Korea.)

We were in Florence, a ZTL city, by MGA in 2016 but chose a hotel outside the ZTL (and with secure MGA parking). In Arezzo and Sienna we have left our (modern) car in a public car park outside the old city for some days and walked to our hotel. However would not do that with the MGA.

Some hotels in Italy have secure parking in a garage or a closed yard that is part of the hotel. First step might be to ask your hotel what parking it can arrange for you.

If the hotel is inside the ZTL it may be possible for the hotel to provide a short-term luggage drop-off permit for you - we have used this system in Sienna.

Stephen,
This sounds like fun! Several members of my car club have tossed around the idea of shipping our cars to Europe and touring for a couple of weeks.

Can you provide me with some information such as shipping cost, transit time from USA to Europe, insurance while it is in transit and while driving in Europe, etc., etc.

Thanks

If you have not decided details of your three days train travel, a useful website for Italian train services is Trenitalia.
