MG MGA - Bangers and Cash

For any of you who follow Bangers and Cash on the Yesterday channel the latest episode is being shown tonight for the first time at 2000 hours UK time. It will include a 1962 MGA Mk2.

I just missed it Steve, I suppose it will be repeated regularly on the Yesterday Channel.

Have you seen the new Bangers and Cash "offshoot" (still on the Yesterday Channel) where the B & C producers buy a classic car at one of the Mathewsons auctions?

They then send it to a restorers so that they can then try to resell it at a profit.

I have only managed to see a couple of the episodes, but so far, they have lost money on each project, which is no real surprise.

Entertaining though.

Cheers

Yes, it’s strange that they buy in, effectively, a wholesale environment, spend money, then expect to cash in selling back in the same market place.

Mind you, it’s less wacky than ‘Antiques Roadshow’, where so called ‘experts’ buy at a retail outlet, then expect to bag a profit selling on at auction: completely barmy and I wouldn’t call them ‘expert’, unless you define expert as ’a has been, under pressure’.

Steve, I missed it. Was it good?

Colyn, What is that other show called? - sounds good. I remember seeing a similar programme several years back, where they bought cars online from europe, imported them, worked on them, and always seemed to lose money - I appreciaated their honesty.

I read on a forum about Wheeler and Dealers - apparently they bought an MG from a dealer, did it up and then sold it to "someone who was buying for a mate". The forum thread suggested the unrevealed "mate" was the original dealer who sold it! So he had the car done up at a cheap price (no labour costs as W&Ds dont bother accounting for that) and W&Ds got their money back, plus a tiny bit extra. So a win - win deal. Obviously I have no idea if this was true or not. Form your own opinion.

Didn’t see program but finished up last night watching an old episode of Midsommer Murder where an Iris Blue 1600 A was the star of the show. It did crash but clearly no real damage to car.

It was a red coupe. Reasonable condition but fitted with fibreglass wings so the gapping was awful in places. I think it went around £16K. The other car from the same owner was better; a Singer Le Mans.

I have always had an issue with the Wheeler Dealer rebuilds taking very little account of the labour costs and time spent. They always give the impression of good profits. However, we all know that if labour costs were included very few average price car rebuilds would show a profit.

Well I finally managed to catch the episode and I enjoyed watching it.
The Coupe featured reminded me of my previous MGA which was a MkII FHC which similarly had GRP wings.

They actually fitted quite well with reasonably good door gaps etc, certainly better than the coupe featured on Bangers and Cash.

The Singer Le Mans that Steve mentioned, was a beautiful car, so nice in fact that I am glad I wasn't actually attending the auction, if I had been there, the car would have been coming home with me!

Graham, the program was called Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics. It is on the Yesterday Channel or you can login online to UK TV to see it.

Cheers
