MG MGA - Banjo Axle sockets

Some years ago I had a small batch of sockets made to fit the large nut on the end of the Banjo axle. If you have ever worked on one of these axles you will know that it is difficult if not impossible to torque up the nut to the recommended, I think, 150 ft lbs.

I have had a few request to have another batch made, but need to establish if it will work or not. I havnt spoken to the manufacturer yet, as an accurate indication of demand would help with the pricing.

For info the sockets are 3/4 in drive and are fully heat treated impact sockets.

Any comments welcome.

Colin. Just my humble opinion on the issue of the axle nut socket for what it’s worth. You are right to say it’s a devil of a tricky job to keep the socket on the big, but very thin nut, at the same time as trying to apply 150psi with a long bar. The offset force inevitably wants to make the socket slip off and damage the nut. I could only successfully do it by asking my wife to apply pressure onto the end of the socket with a heath robinson lever system against the garage wall whilst I applied the 150psi! Otherwise it would slip off even with a good tightly fitting socket. I finally coughed up the price of a Brown and Gammons special socket which has a radial steel plate flange with holes to allow it to be bolted onto the hub studs. Not cheap, but works a treat.
Why not make your sockets that way whilst you on with it?

B&G part works well. Easy to adapt Moss socket to this design.

I cut my spanner out of 1/8 mild steel sheet. about 10" long. Tightened using a hammer.
You dont need 150 ft lb. The purpose is only to stop the hub falling off.
I acknowledge there is some disagreement with this.

This is my take on the octagonal socket. Flat bar cut into segments and clamped around the nut for welding, a piece of 2” pipe and the flange.

The two bolts in the angle connect the socket onto a lever arm. The larger hole between between the two bolts is for a long 12mm screwed rod which goes right through the banjo with a nut on each end to hold the socket in place so that the required torque can be applied via a spring balance on the other end of the lever arm.

It took a couple of hours to make out of garage scrap.

Happy Christmas
