i'm restoring a 1957 MGA and am about to order carpet - just wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to the best carpet set to order - Moss, Victoria British, one of the many advertised on eBaY.. etc. feedback greatly appreciated.

Heritage Trim (http://www.heritagetrim.com) offers kits that use original spec Karvel carpet.
Mark Lambert

Interesting site, looks like the very top (expensive) end of car restoration. They state that they are a British based company and refer to Vicarage UK a well known (again very expensive) restorer here. However their only contact details are in US and Canada.

Does British based mean that they do work and components for British cars then? or do they also manufacture and sell over here?
Neil McGurk

If you are making your own carpets then Woolies over here, I believe, still sell the Karvel carpet with a hessian backing compared with the original latex back. It's about £20 per square metre but only a metre wide and is a man made fibre. A higher quality and more expensive 100% wool carpet is the Wilton type used by Jaguar cars and comes in 60" widths at £30 sq. metre. This looks really luxurious but I wonder how well the wool would stand up to a shower of rain and whether it would shrink!

Rick,
I got the Woolon carpet kit from Scarborough Faire and am very happy with it. Comes with complete insulation/padding. It contributes to keeping the cockpit cool. I recommend it.

Image is before installing the lift-the-dot fasteners.

Jim, that looks pretty authentic to me.

Mike, the only original bits of carpet I had appear to be hessian backed?
Neil McGurk

Neil, You are probably right in saying the original was hessian backed Karvel. The carpet I'm replacing may not be original although it certainly looks 50 years old! Mike

Scarborough Faire in RI USA sell a "premium " carpet called Woolon it is 100% synthetic but has the texture and appearance of Wilton Wool anyone used it ? Claims to have the same feel and weight a of genuine wool but it resists fading and stains better than wool and is less expensive than wool or wool blends
Chris Velardi

I put Scarborough Faire's woolon carpet in my TD, very nice. Marvin

I installed the Scarborough Faire Woolen in my 1600 Coupe and it fitted well and looks great. I modified (cut) the tunnel piece and right hand side toe piece to correctly fit around the starter bulge. Cecelia sent me some edging that I had a local upholsterer sew on for me. Now it feels perfectly.

Comparing catalogs Moss vs SF, the last one has more options than Moss, different grades and better prices, the photo from Andy shows a very nice carpet.

Now the dilemma of what color wollon from Scarborough ?! My "A" is Chariot red with tan leather seats ... do I go back to the standard Black carpet or make it a little different with a Tan or Saddle Brown ?
Chris Velardi

Chris, it's your car and you should do what YOU want to do. My Coupe is also Chariot Red with tan interior and the tan carpet from SF looks like it was made for the car. The colors go together so well. I've seen red cars with tan interior with both grey and black carpets and they don't have the same impact. I know that all Coupes came with grey carpets but I think the tan looks far better, and it's MY car.
