MG MGA - BMC MkII grille to swap

Looking for someone who has an incorrect (for their model car) NOS BMC MkI Grill but who needs a NOS BMC MkII grille to swap. Mine still in the BMC box, no damage, brand new. Cheers, Peter

Well I do not have a NOS Mk I grill but good lord would I love to have the NOS MkII grill. Every replacement I've seen fits poorly including the one from Moss currently on my car.

I'm quite jealous...

Peter,

Can you just change the slats and keep your shell? You can at least get very good original Mk1 used slats. As they are stainless steel they can be refinished to an as new condition, same for the aluminium top and bottom rails.

You can even use all the hardware on your Mk2 grille and just change the individual slats. I have some original Mk1 and Mk2 grilles and everything appears interchangeable. I think I might be able provide a set of mk1 slats (and other hardware), if you would want to go down that route (I just need to check that I have a set that is completely undamaged).

Certainly you don't want to part with a perfect grille!

Hi Neil,

Yes, the other option I was considering was a swap of my NOS MkII set of slats for a NOS MkI set of slats. Unfortuneately I only have a Moss MkI complete grille so the option available to me at present is to use only the slats from that grille if I cannot find an original set of slats. The rivets of the Moss set are rusted...never been in the rain, never on a car and dry stored??!! The holes, suprisingly, don't tie up either to attach them to the surround.

Hope you find an undamaged set of original MkI slats ..........let me know? If not, I'll have to remove all the rivets, make two new ali bars and re-rivet etc. That's Plan C. Cheers, Peter

I have a number of loose original slats, a complete grille that I dismantled, and about six or seven of the slats are bent, but the others are OK. They are from a MK1 grille.

Ml1 and Mk11 slats are different lengths, and the shells are completely different, so parts are not interchageable apart form the false nose and badge, and maybe the rails that the sats mount onto.

If the slats are of any use to you, drop me a mail

Peter, the rails are also interchangeable, there is an additional one on the front of the Mk2 grille.

Don't even think about using the Moss slats, they are too thin gauge (slightly different shape easily bent and will slice your fingers). I will have a look tomorrow, and I'm pretty sure I have a nice complete original inner grille.

Dominic, the (original) Mk1 and Mk2 shells I have appear absolutely identical, do you know what any difference may be?

Sorry, I am of course talking complete rubbish. The front shell is the same of course, just the shroud behind it makes the angle of the slats different and therefore the slats are shorter.
