MG MGA - Body to Frame Packing Kit
Hi Guys I'm almost at the stage where the body of my 1958 Coupe will be reattached to the chassis, following a 7-year (so far) restoration. I've been reading the archives on this subject and most seem to agree that the felt packing should be replaced by a closed cell foam strip. I have some neoprene (in the form of an old wet-suit which I used when I was young enough, and fit enough, to windsurf). I seem to recall that it was pretty good at keeping out the water. Its about 3mm thick. Do you think that this material will be suitable? Regards Dave |

That seems a little on the thin side. It may or may not take up the irregular spaces between body and side frame rails. 3/8-inch thick closed cell foam rubber strip with one size sticky is pretty cheap at Ace Hardware or Home Depot. |

I think you want something more compressible than the neoprene. Stick with Barney's advice and go with the closed cell foam. |

What's wrong with felt? Barry. |
Barry Gannon |
Felt soaks up water and promotes rust. |

Neoprene also soaks up water in the cells so it's no improvement over felt in that respect. |

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone know where I could get the 3/8" closed cell foam over here in the UK? Is it the same stuff that's sold for draughtproofing doors and windows? Dave |
