MG MGA - Bodywork

How thick is the packing for the body to frame, in general and in particular as in the attached image. Also, can someone supply the dimension "X"? Area around the front body mounts.

Art Pearse

Art, The packing material varies - it is made from 2mm cork, 3mm felt and the section you have sketched is 10mm rubber. The "packing kit" is very complex - I made several kits a few years ago as they were unobtainable. I have one kit left - and one last car under restoration - so I could give you some advice if needed. I also have a rough sketch showing what goes where that I could send to you.

Todd Clarke supplies the full kits.
Gary Lock

Barry, the 10mm would explain why I get different dimensions for "X" from the frame and from what is left of the body. Could you please email me your sketch? Maybe should buy the body packing kit now before I need o use it. Is Todd Clarke the best?
Art Pearse

The packing under the flange is a closed cell foam and compresses to about half (perhaps more)when the body is installed. The foam packing does not run under the body mounting. The cork gasket is used there and the flange is not necessarily flush with the underside of the body mount as shown in your sketch.
John DeWolf

John, according to Barney's picture, it is flush, and my "residue" was too. That means the foam must scrunch down to the cork thickness.
Art Pearse

Art, I have just checked my Mk11. body shell, which I believe to be original, and the body mount bracket is close to flush. The foam rubber, over time, must eventually compress to the cork thickness.

I will send the sketch as soon as I learn how to scan it! Oh, the challenges of modern technology!!

The dimension "X" is 85mm and the bracket has a large (14mm) hole to cater for the vagueries of the body fit.

Art, It came back to me straight away! Try emailing me and we take it from there.

What are the two holes for at the edges of the "sloping sills" ?
Art Pearse

Art, I assume you mean at the bottom of the inside face of the sloping chassis member that sweeps up to the goal post? If so, I reckon it is a drain hole and/or access point to apply/drain Waxoil or similar preservatives. Just leave it as it is covered by the bodywork.
A photo always helps, see below, right side bottom of sloping member.

My guess is a pressure relief hole for the welding process
HCR Rathvon

No, not that hole, the ones on the body. the sloping sills that rest on the sloping supports of the goalposts. there is one high up and ne low down, about 1/2' from the edge.
Art Pearse

Mine had sheet metal screws through those holes into the sloped chassis members. On page Q2 of the SPL there is a list of body mounting hardware that is not in the illustrations. I believe the screws are among those items.
John DeWolf

That could be for attaching your finishing panel. Big hole, if I am right, I would fix it to re attach the panel.
