MG MGA - bolt holes in door pillar
I just opened up the RH B pillar for reconstruction and see there are 2 holes with (or were) captive nuts at the top end. Are these the hood fixing holes? (same both sides) |

I'm currently working on the B-post areas and my new B-posts only have two holes for the door catch, two holes for the door stop rubbers both on the inside facing the door and three holes with captive nuts along the front edge for the shut face panel. These are, of course, repro. posts so may differ from originals. There is the separate panel to which the B-post is fixed (the one with the pressed out section in it) and this has three holes, 3.25" between the outer two, with captive nuts along a vertical line a couple of inches to the rear of the front edge (for the door seal). These 1/4" (from memory) captive nuts are to fix the hood frame plate. I'd get you a picture but at present it's b....y freezing in my garage right now! .........................Mike |

I've just replaced both sets of captive nuts etc. A tad tricky , in that I had to completely replace the whole of the small section that had the captive nuts etc- I fabricated two identical pieces ( with the nuts on the reverse side) and relocated/welded them in as close to original as is humanly possible. |

I cut out the same bit, its about the only way to do it properly! |

I'd be interested in seeing some pictures guys, as I'm about to tackle this area myself. Chris. |

Chris, Here is a picture of my door pillar area before resto, it may be of some use for reference. Tony ![]() |

Chris, as requested - here is the "before" pic. RH B pillar inside car showing hood fixing holes needing repair.

And this is what I cut out - note the scratch marks to position the new holes!

And this is the bit to be welded in - I used 1/4 flat bar tapped 1/4 NF, to be plug welded to the plate. Holes are 1" apart

Another picture of what you don't normally see - behind the B-post before it's fitted......................Mike

Mike (or anyone) - what attaches to the top captive nut? |
Art Pearse |
Art, If I understand your question correctly you are refering to the upper most of the three captive nuts. All three captive nuts are used to attach the soft top frame to the area behind the B post. In the attached picture you can see the three screw holes in the mounting bracket. John ![]() |

OK, thanks John. I knew the bottom two were for the hood frame, but not the top one as well. I should have inspected my hood more closely! |

Here's what a new one looks like. All 3 holes that are in a line are used for the convertible top. The 2 large holes are used to hold the splash plates. The bracket is used to hold the body to frame. Here's a link to some pictures. http://picasaweb.google.com/larrymazoway/MGA# Cheers. Larry ![]() |

Wow! What a starting point. And I thought mine was bad. Great job. |

Todd Clark makes a nice repair piece for the captive nuts that can be tacked in without tearing apart the B post. JIM in NH |
