MG MGA - Boot Rack

Hi

My boot lid has four holes in it for I presume a boot rack, but I cannot find any with the same hole pitch. Maybe someone recognizes the spacing and can point me in the right direction, The other alternative would be to weld the holes shut and buy another rack. The holes are 16 3/4 inches front back and 23 1/2 side to side.

thanks

My car has the same hole spacings and is fitted with an AMCO luggage rack. I don't know how long its been fitted but it was there when the car came back from the USA in the late 1980s and as far as I am concerned is now part of the car's history. I like having it as the originality "experts" are quite keen to tell me its wrong.

Barney shows the rack at

Finding one could be a problem though.

Hi Malcolm

Yes AMCO went out of business a long time ago. I managed to get two racks for my Porsche 356s but that took a few years and continuous scouring of EBay, then they had to be rechromed. The chances of an MGA AMCO I guess are equally remote so I guess its time to try my hand at aluminium welding.

Many thanks

Hi

Interestingly I have just found a new replica of the AMCO rack for sale here in France from Limora

Expensive but available in chrome ot stainless.

Now I have a dilema,weld or spend?

Hi
I have a Limora luggage rack. It is wider than the one on the picture sent by Malcom. I found the installation to be a challenge because it is as large as the boot, and it doesn't follow very well the curves of the boot, I had to make my own custom rubber seals instead of their crap.
See the rack here :

I think the Moss "Amco" rack is the same.
So, be aware of that before purchasing one.

Hi Chris

Thanks for the advice. I think I will weld the holes and buy AHH5496 rack with its supporting rails, it looks better then the AMCO rack.

I had the holes in my coupe boot lid welded but after some years they have showed. When I wanted to mount a luggage rack on my roadster (for an extended trip to the UK some years ago) I bought a nice second hand boot lid and drilled holes in that (I still have the original unmolested lid!) so that I did not face the same problem again! My coupe is red and my (Australian-assembled) roadster is off-white. Others may be lucky but welding the aluminium skin is tricky.
