MG MGA - Boot (trunk) lid handle
One to upset the purist. Clearing my garage, I came across a 1960's style cupboard door handle (as fitted to panels in Thunderbird 2 of 60's the puppet show). A fine solution I thought. Regards Colin p.s. I am just holding the handle in position! ![]() |

If it works and looks right, why not? |
Nick Kopernik |
Colin Please tell me you haven't fitted it yet. Dont start drilling holes in the boot, you may regret it! Graham |

No, no, no. Please at least find a small handle that comes from a Brit-car. That way, in 20 or so years it's existence on your car will be fodder for a few threads on this forum. |

I have seen the TC or TD dash grab handle used...it has an MG emblem on it! |

Outstanding idea Colin. An excellent option for those who don't have boot racks to use as a handle. It has inspired me to do the same with my doors. Steve ![]() |

And it's not even April 1st! Of course, you could fit a bed mattress coil spring in the boot. This would then push up the boot lid as soon as the catch is released (like a jack-in-the box), thus preserving the clean looks of boot lid. Think I'll patent that one. Dave |

the brass handle doesnt match the other bright work a chrome one would be better. Bob |

Love it Steve. But why no door lock? G |

Graham. No roof, It's in the attic. In fact, no need to open the door, just climb in! Steve |
Steve Gyles |
NOooooooooooooo!!!!!! |

Steve, That's hilarious! Jim |

Now you have done it Steve! You have just totally undermined my disagreement with a couple of classic car insurance companies. My position was that it was impossible to fit door locks to an MGA roadster in a practical and aesthetically pleasing manner! Until now!😁 I expect they are now going to insist that we fit them to all our cars. Still, there are a couple of plus points. We now will have somewhere handy to hang our walking sticks and to conveniently store that extra toilet roll😁! Thanks Steve. Colyn |

Hi Steve, I am sorry sir, but I would never ever be seen in my MGA with cupboard door handles screwed to my doors. No offence Steve but they look ridiculous. Surely there are other car door handles which will not look as ridiculous as those on you car. Frank |
F. Camilleri |
Frank I thought they look aesthetically pleasing. Mind you, the one in my photo does not have a lock so it's off to the ironmonger shop later for a replacement. I might have a problem though as these door handles normally have a locking catch rather than a key so it does not really solve the security issue. I might just go for one that has the Engaged/Vacant window. Not sure yet whether to go for gold plated or silver. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
"Vacant/ Engaged window" Steve? Surely you don't have a "special" seat in your car that is both useful and "convenient" for long journeys? I would bet that Doug no longer wants to know if you would consider selling your car Steve!! 😁. |
Colyn Firth |
I don't suppose that the door handle shown on your car is gold plated. Well, again Steve don't be offended, it's not my style to offend anyone, but if it was solid gold it would still look uugh, on any MGA. Frank |
F. Camilleri |
Good point Frank. I think I might weld the nuts on the countersunk set screws, then no one can steal the handles unless of course they remove the door hinges. I respect your opinion, no problem there. Not everyone likes the BRG paint either. Steve |
Steve Gyles |
Hi Steve, IMHO there is nothing wrong with an MGA being painted BRG. The colour goes down very well with the style of the car. Frank |
F. Camilleri |
I agree. I think the BRG shows the handles off to their best advantage. Steve |

It's been a wet morning. I have had my Midge mascot sitting doing nothing since I sold the MGTC so I thought while I am in a hole drilling frenzy I would put it on the MGA. Helps with the bonnet opening just as Colin found with the boot. Steve PS. Car needs a clean after all the modifications. Probably wait til the very beginning of April and the better weather. ![]() |
Steve Gyles |
Ah! I recognise that bonnet mascot Steve, Isn't it "The Spirit of Lunacy" ?😁. Cheers Colyn |
Colyn Firth |
Sorry Steve, no comment on the mascot. Frank |
F. Camilleri |
Whichever you buy Colyn, don't forget to get a second as a spare you can carry around with you. |
Graeme Williams |
Whoops, sorry Colin; got the wrong Colyn here. Ignore my comment- I'm sure you wont want to carry a spare! |
Graeme Williams |
Thats a relief Graeme, I would have had to carry two handles, a right and a left to be certain that I had the correct spare! :-) |
