MG MGA - Brake Drum Color

Re-doing my '59 1600 with Chrome wire wheels. Can someone tell me what color the brake drums should be? They are currently painted silver/aluminum and are pretty crummy....some spots look like they may have been black. Thanks, Tom
TJ Connolly

Yes - they should be black - although CKDs in OZ were silver I think.
Cam Cunningham

Yes, that's right, it seems all except the Australian assembled cars were black, but then wire wheels were only silver paint not chrome, so you could paint the drums whatever colour you like!

IMHO black will show the chrome wires off best.
Neil McGurk

Chrome wires and black drums look best. Drums should be black.

Cam, Neil,

Thanks.......black it will be!!

I did mine with POR 15, but if I had to do it again I would have them powder coated. The black looks great behind the chrome rims.

I would suggest that you have them sand blasted, and then paint with an aerosol of black barbecue paint. This will stand up to the heat that is generated in the drums with braking.
Did mine this way about 15 years ago and they still look great.

I have always powder coated black with each restoration - 5 cars now. My old daily driver 26 years ago - drums still look like new.

RJ, I didn't see the drums at all. Are you sure they are there? Perhaps I was distracted. Better go look again.
David Holmes

Painted mine with some very cheap black paint out of an aerosol can that I bought for about £1.50 in my local motoring supplies shop. That was 9 years ago when I put new drums on the back during my wire wheel conversion. They still look like new. Pointless (in my opinion) paying any more. When (if) they ever need repainting it's only a morning's job and another £1.50.
