MG MGA - BROKEN EZ OUT
YOU GOT IT, BROKE AN EZ OUT OFF AND HAVING A PROBLEM DRILLING IT OUT ANY TRICKES |
PETE CERKA |
Pete, you probably won't be able to drill it out, best bet is to get a Dremel tool or similar and use small grinding bits to grind it out. If there is some of the bolt or stud protruding and you can weld another bolt to it that sometimes helps remove the old one as the heat helps loosen it, but since you already have the easy out in it that's a last resort. |

I recently broke a tap off which is hard like an ez out. I was able to grind it out using a carbide burr in a rotozip, but it was a very slow process. |

Jeff, there are tools for removing a broken tap, but I have never seen one for an ez out. No product on the market is more mis-named then an ez out. |

If the part is small enough to carry in your hands, there are commercial shop services with ELOX or ADM machine (Electronic Discharge Machining) that can burn the tap out. Rather tough to handle a chassis frame. |

I've had success using a small punch to rock the stub back and forth until it was loose enough to screw out. Remember, easy outs are left hand thread. If it's deeper in the hole, sometimes "drilling" it with a cheap drill bit will heat it enough to loosen. If the broken bolt is in a through hole, you can drill from the back until you hit the first hole then drive it out. I haven't tried it but Loctite freeze and release looks interesting: http://www.loctitefreezeandrelease.com/ You have to love any product whose motto is "freeze your nuts off" Last but not least you could follow this guy's example: http://pico-systems.com/edm.html Need an EDM? just build one! Have fun, Bill |

If its made from carbon steel try to heat it up to cherry red and let it cool real slow. This will remove the temper and allow you to center punch and drill it out. I have done this a couple of times now with taps with good success. Best Wishes, Ian |
